I'm not so sure about 'superscript' here — remember that is only the typographical description of the result of what an 'exposant' is.
Do you have the figures that go with?
I suspect this is more to do with fractions; suppose, for example, this was a reference number in the format 12345/6789, which might be regarded as if it were a fraction, in which case '12345' would be the numerator ('exponent') and '6789' the denominator ('divisor') — in other words, the 'top' and 'bottom' parts of the fraction, or in my suggested scenario, the first and second parts of the reference no. |
