That's right. Some high-tech start-ups might be less of a stickler for academic records; that I don't know much about. But bigger corporations like IBM make sure that you are who you say you are. Once hired, new college graduates have to submit an original college transcript that has detailed information of all the course work they have taken. So your GPA had better match what you claimed it to be. As I remember, the university transcript also had to be ordered and mailed out directly from the Office of the Registrar; so there's absolutely no room for fraud.

Back in the '80s when IBM had full employment(to us it meant no one was ever severed from the company unless it was voluntary), a guy from Africa I worked with in East Fishkill was let go when HR found out that he really didn't have the proper legal status.

Indeed. Last night I suddenly thought of the terms "塞内"、"塞外". So it absolutely does make sense that people from your area refer to the eastern seaboard as "内地".

不错。有些公司在 interview 时就要求看成绩单、学位证书,而且只看原件。我们的成绩单是彩色的,一复印立即会在复印件上出现无数 COPY 字样。那时我还感到很新鲜。中国大陆的成绩单通常是打印的。虽然有公章,但有些人会伪造公章。国内有些学生在申请留学时在成绩单、文凭上作假。他们所申请的学校发现作假行为后,会将这些学生列上黑名单,并通报给其它有关大学。这里有些律师败类为了赚钱就帮移民伪造文件。被移民局发现后,移民申请被拒,甚至申请者会被递解出境。有些申请者和律师还因此而吃上官司。

前庭确实给我带来过好运,就好比如当年能考上大学(当然不可忽视的一个因素是照顾分数)。我娃一直梦想能考上军校,但愿能带来同样的好运。

一周时间还真不够,我们去了杭州,邬镇,上海。本想延长时间,在浙江的腹地多走走,听听那如外语一般的方言(比方说,zhoudan 会被称作“丹达达”),不料正逢多年不遇的酷暑高峰,加上是背包旅游,热浪滚滚,汗流浃背。我们落荒而逃,一路狂奔,直到兰州转车才喘过气来,35度的气温觉得凉快,吃牛肉面时流汗也不那样粘乎了。

这下你对“忆江南,最忆是杭州”这句话一定又会有另一番体会了吧?兰州的夏天还是很舒服的。以前有位在西宁工作的同学对我说,到了兰州之后发现兰州的气候比北京好,到了西宁之后又发现西宁的气候比兰州更好。

人均还只有阿尔巴尼亚的水平。跟日本的差距其实大大的。尽管日本这些年都是滞胀,可老百姓的生活水平是相当高的。只有哪一天人均达到日本的水平,那才是真正有意义的。
