Will would never know that one of his cast's surnames, Robin Goodfellow, aka Puck, was to be adapted slightly over four centuries later as the title of a famous mafioso film starring Ray Liotta and Robert de Niro. But not Marlon Brando.Collapse

Is it just me or Jan 29

are the days going by way quicker? My notion of dates has gotten so awful with Covid. Anyways, day # "I stopped counting" of the pandemic in sunny Brazil, everything still weird.

Got a nice spongebob mask from my wife though, that was nice.

Bruno, I think they must be going faster, or I notice the way the months seem to come and go much faster. Suddenly I think, Another new month, or A month just around the corner, like now. It seems like yesterday that I was doing the end-of-month bills, and here I am doing them again.

The Catalans have regional elections this month, on 14 February. The usual ten or fifteen minutes on the news to cover the squabbling over everything - why are we being encouraged to go out to vote en masse, while listening to grim warnings about doing anything else en masse? Good question.

The man currently in charge of the Generalitat government there has called for Catalans to be "responsible" on election day. Two words occur to me, "yeah" and "right". Actually, a couple of other words occur to me too. The second is "you". The first is also monosyllabic, and ends in K, but it's not "thank". And there are eight or nine parties vying for power, too, so we're treated to a much greater variety of nightly bullshit. The mainstream parties I more or less understand, but I gave up trying to get my head around the difference between the four or five local Catalan outfits a long time ago. Oh, and we have the former president of the Generalitat, now wanted in Spain, but Belgium refuses to extradite him, popping up every so often on a video link from Waterloo, where he skipped off to a couple of years ago (?) while others were being rounded up in Catalonia and imprisoned for incitement to violence, and from where he kind of still runs his imaginary republic.

They compare this man to Lluís Companys, the Catalan president who also skipped town at the end of the Spanish Civil War, but was lifted by the Gestapo in France, and handed back to Franco, who promptly had him shot. The story goes that Companys asked the firing squad if he could take his shoes and socks off first, so that he could die with his feet touching Catalan soil. Not quite the same thing these days.

Spain's health minister is no longer Spain's health minister, because he ditched the job to campaign as the presidential candidate on his own Catalan turf. This meant that plump little fun-loving Miquel Iceta had to be elbowed aside as the natural candidate there to make room for the now ex-minister. Not that Miquel was too bothered, or so he said. "All for the common good ... best man for the job ... hands-on experience ... I am at the disposal of the socialist party ... etc. etc." he droned to explain why he'd been kicked upstairs. But, of course, he didn't move aside for free, oh no. He was sworn in a day or so ago as Spain's new minister for territorial policy and the something or other. So one Catalan couldn't wait to leave Madrid for Barcelona, and another Catalan couldn't wait to leave Barcelona for Madrid. It's a politician thing - we wouldn't understand it.

After the regular calls for the ex-health minister to resign for messing up on Covid, now that he has, it's shame on him for resigning to pursue his own political interests. Chief Opposition Gnome Pablo Casado of the PP can be relied upon to pop up every so often to cry "shame" at anything at all. The far-right Vox can, too, except they shout a lot louder behind their green masks with Spanish flags on them. What was it the new health ministeress lisped in her delightful Canary Island accent in her first speech in the job, as a call for unity? Oh yes, something like "the only enemy to be defeated here is Covid-19". Yeah, right again. Nice one, Carolina.

Covid - to be continued ...

Casino Feb 1

It seems that they had all been shopping before they went to the casino, and were using casino chips until they ran out of them, and began to use the toilet rolls. I'm sorry to say I don't much like the look of your friends, though, Exy. Kind of sinister. Although someone who prefers "Angel Soft" paper obviously can't be a hit man.

Of course, Portia. I see that now. You've just come in all sweaty and dirty from the hit. All that messing around with car boots and spades and shallow graves. So when you get back home, you treat yourself to a bit of that Angel Soft double-ply tenderness as you read the paper, do the crossword and reflect on the next customer, have a shower, change into another shell suit, and you're ready for another spree in next to no time.

Kids' pranks Feb 1

The police had a bit of bovva on Saturday night in San Sebastián when they moved to break up a "concentration" - not sure what they mean there, a demo or something, maybe - and some 200 young things turned on them with bottles and stones. There's been a bit of that kind of thing lately.

The police had a bit of bovva on Saturday night in San Sebastián when they moved to break up a "concentration" - not sure what they mean there, a demo or something, maybe - and some 200 young things turned on them with bottles and stones. There's been a bit of that kind of thing lately.

The Basque Nationalist Party's biggest noise, Ortuzar, asked the hard-line Basque nationalists of Bildu to "control its young people". Mind you, it wasn't so many years that one of Ortuzar's predecessors in the job, Arzalluz, was dismissing the very same kind of thing perpetrated by their party's young pups as "kids' pranks". Which didn't go down too well, since one of the favourite pranks is to set fire to the large wheelie waste containers and overturn them in the street.

One 15-year old was arrested, which kind of makes you wonder what the parents think about all this, especially since everyone, not just teenagers, is supposed to be indoors by 10 pm due to those nocturnal mobility restrictions. But everything's closed anyway, so maybe it's understandable that the only fun to be had is chucking stuff at the pigs.

To make matters worse, the local footie team Real Sociedad only managed a draw, and Athletic Bilbao were beaten 2-1 away to Barcelona. Messi got in first with a goal from a free kick (does he ever miss? - it must be so depressing for a goalkeeper waiting in the net, knowing that it's going to be a goal no matter what he does), thus putting paid to the vague hopes of Bilbao fans, as the sports journalist writes in the paper today, that Messi might just stroll around the pitch eating nuts during the game. This, because Leo is more than annoyed that news of his 555 million euro deal for a 4-year contract had just been leaked, amid rumours that the Argentinian's price tag might even have ruined FC Barcelona. 11 million euros a month. Nice work if you can get it. Which is why he has to keep netting those free kicks every single time, I suppose.

It's just another group of troublemakers out there tormenting people. I don't like their look either.
The "Angel Soft" toilet paper is just for disguise. They are not "soft" at all. They are the kind of "friends" I will use to to give special warnings to bad neighbours.
(Matthias: I can give you their contacts.)
They had nothing to do, so I told them to come here for a card game.
Card games are a great way for everyone to stay mentally active by working on various brain functions and skills.
It keeps body and mind busy.

Poker face Feb 1

I’m no poker expert but I thought it was all about watching people’s faces to see if they’re bluffing.

With everyone masked up for the virus, how are you supposed to win?

It’s certainly not going to be easy in Wales at the minute. The only people you can legally play with indoors are your kids, and of course you have to let kids win.

Combining it with a trip to the supermarket has pros and cons. On the one hand, you get free hand sanitiser (although on both hands would be better) which will help prevent card-based transmission, and if you do it in the frozen produce section you could maybe use real chips. On the other hand, you still have to wear a face covering (although it would be better to wear it on your face).

Which leaves exercise. The rules were relaxed a smidge on Saturday and we can now exercise outdoors with one other person. But does poker count as exercise?

Well, the rules specifically permit fishing as exercise, and all you do there is sit around for hours on end with a vacant expression hoping for a bit of luck, so...
