Hello everyone,

Sorry to be asking a question I'm sure has been discussed here before.
I'm a native Arab who moved to London, UK, a couple of months ago. I've been trying to look for all the reputable associations to decide on which to join. I specialise in media and literary translation. And I'm also a writer.

So, as a start, I already joined the Society of Authors (SoA) and its subsidiary the Translators Association (TA), as well as the ITI London Regional Group, but I want to know the best associations to join as a translator.

Unfortunately, according to ITI, my language pair (English-Arabic) is categorised under the New or Small Language Group, which is assessed differently than other groups, and I'm starting to think I won't pass the assessment criteria.

Just for back-up, what else should I go to? CIoL? IAPTI? Any other associations that you've greatly benefited from?

Thanks in advance!

Nema

CIOL is a good bet Dec 1, 2017

I'm a member of ITI and CIOL myself. I would avoid IAPTI for a number of reasons that I cannot get into in this space. Suffice it to say that several reputable translators I've known on LinkedIn and Twitter have quit IAPTI, and they have published their reasons but not here.

But what are you trying to accomplish? Start with just one association, that's plenty for the time being. In the end, it's your customers who help you pay the bills.

Thank you! Dec 1, 2017

Thank you, Mario. I've just been trying to figure out which is best to join. I feel ITI is best for me at the moment for a number of reasons. I've recently applied for IAPTI but I've seen the talks about members quitting so I'm having second thoguhts.

I think I'll go for ITI for now and keep CIoL in mind. And I'm considering the ProZ membership, which seems to have more popularity than I've thought.

Thanks again!
