Here is a paragraph that I have in a text

Universal Credit replaces income-related Jobseekers Allowance, income-related Employment Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. These older benefits are now called ‘legacy benefits’. You cannot make a new claim for legacy benefits from 27 January 2021 apart from Housing Benefit which you can claim if you are in specified supported or temporary homeless accommodation.

What I said has nothing to do with "personal opinion". Did you get from it even the slightest hint as to what would be my personal opinion about Universal Credit? Don't think so.

My point is that knowing the background / the developments / the history behind the issues can make a significant difference when translating. Whatever dictionaries have to say, "context" - which would include any background information, even not mentioned in the text itself - counts far more for the first step: understanding the ST.

Quand le traducteur lit dans un texte source, a fortiori un document officiel, que l'auteur a utilisé le verbe to replace, il irait à l'encontre des principes de la profession s'il ne traduisait pas d'une manière ou d'une autre par l'idée de remplacement, quels que soient les termes qu'il utilise. Tout le monde se fiche éperdument de ses sentiments personnels à propos du thème discuté.

followed for years all the political saga around the Universal credit, I can tell you that all the previous benefits didn't "disappear" nor where really "replaced" at all. The main point was just to have one "amalgamated benefit" whereby instead of up to 4-5-6 separate claims and payments there would only one claim, and only one payment, while the total amount was supposed to stay the same.

Reprenez le texte que j'ai cité dans ma réponse : « If you already get other benefits, Universal Credit is replacing the following benefits: » Les anciennes allocations, celles qui ont disparu, sont reprises dans la liste qui suit (voir l'extrait dans ma réponse). Si vous en étiez bénéficiaire, elles sont remplacées par ce Universal Credit. La phrase est claire.

"des avantages déjà obtenus"

pas vraiment des "avantages" - le terme officiel est "prestations sociales" (ou plus précisément "prestations de protection sociale"), plus connues sous le nom de "allocations" (de logement, familiales etc.)

et "déjà obtenus" fait penser à "l'acquis communautaire", ce qui serait un mauvais parallèle.

Eliza Hall: This is exactly the concept: allocations/pr. soc. that previously existed have been replaced by a new program, so new applicants will get the new kind, while existing recipients continue to get the "type ancien."

Odile Raymond: The concept may be right, but the wording is not./"Allocations de type ancien" does not make a jarring impression on you because, as a non- native speaker of French, you do not have that linguistic intuition.

-> Just because your personal associations for "de type ancien" involve earthenware doesn't mean that no one else would ever see it differently. I learned that from my own past mistakes.
