(1) ProZ.com "cookies" - fresh from the oven!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How about a quick diversion?
ProZ.com member Gianni Pastore recently called for creative photos that include the word "ProZ" in any situation. Among the clever submissions received so far is a picture of a fresh batch of ProZ "cookiez", compliments of texjax DDS PhD. :)
Have a look at http://www.proz.com/topic/102742 - and maybe even add your own "ProZ" photo!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(2) Option now available to 'endorse' ProZ.com Professional Guidelines from your profile
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever noticed ProZ.com's list of professional guidelines for translators, interpreters and translation companies?
These guidelines, produced in ProZ.com's early days by discussion among staff members and moderators, capture the professional practices felt to be appropriate for our community: http://www.proz.com/professional-guidelines
Do you endorse these policies? If so, there is now a way to indicate that. To show your endorsement of these guidelines in your profile, go to the page above and endorse by clicking the button at the bottom of the page.
Once you endorse the guidelines, a statement concerning your endorsement will be displayed your profile: "{Your name} endorses ProZ.com's professional guidelines." This display of endorsement can be toggled on and off (as can the actual endorsement.)
We are the world's largest community of translation professionals, and together, we have the power to raise awareness of what constitute professional practices in our industry. That is the purpose of this new feature.
Note that opting to endorse or not endorse these guidelines will have no effect other than the display of this statement in your profile.
To discuss this topic, go to: http://www.proz.com/topic/103558
(4) First ProZ.com translation contest for students now underway
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"The Little Translator read a few more pages, and laid the pages down on the table. He stared at the text, and found himself uttering that very human of phrases to himself: 'I don’t know what I’m going to do …' He had never had Translation Fear before. Professor Brookesduddy had never mentioned it..."

This is an extract of the source text of ProZ.com First "StudentZ Translation Contest", open to all registered students with member and non-member accounts.

Professional translators at ProZ.com will be invited to participate in the voting phase and will have the chance to give feedback on the entries. There will be membership prizes for the best translation chosen by the community

You will find more details about the contest here: http://www.proz.com/topic/102392

To submit your entry go to http://www.proz.com/?sp=event/casual_contest&sp_mode=contest&contest_id=8

(5) It is now possible to specify your rates with greater precision
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In response to feedback received from members, changes are being made to allow profile owners to specify more precisely the rates they charge in given circumstances.
New features now under development include the ability to specify:
* Different rates for different services, language pairs, and fields of expertise
* Different rate lists for different types of customer (agencies or end clients)
* Surcharges and discounts
* Minimum charges
The beta version of a tool for entering the above information is now available. To use it, and potentially provide feedback or additional requests, go to: http://www.proz.com/?sp=rates_new
Thanks go to those who have submitted feedback related to rates over the years via the online support system (or in the forums), and to site moderators, who spent a significant amount of time formulating and testing the improvements now being made.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(6) Contest #6 ("Relationships"): Winners announced
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 6th translation contest ("Relationships") was the most popular to date, with more members participating (either by entering or by voting) than in all previous contests combined. Winners have been announced - congratulations! See: http://www.proz.com/contests
The next round of the contest will be opened next week. Members may submit entries, any site user may vote and give feedback.
In round 7, as in each previous round, a few improvements will be made to the structure of the contests. Qualification round voting will be changed, and it will be possible to indicate in a structured way one's "likes" and "dislikes" in entries, while providing references.
The purpose of these changes, in addition to providing more feedback to contestants, is to help ensure that an appropriate number of entries reaches the finals (and that the ones selected are the best and most accurate.)
For discussion on the upcoming changes, see: http://www.proz.com/forum/439
It is an objective to increase the number of languages in which source texts are presented. If you are interested in helping to select a source text in your native language, please contact staff member Romina (romina at proz dot com), who will send you the guidelines for selecting source texts along with a list of upcoming themes. (Of course, if you select the text for a round of the contests, you will not be able to submit an entry.)
(7) Improvements to the "Willing to Work Again" (WWA) feedback feature
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ProZ.com's WWA ("Willing to Work Again") feature provides a convenient means for profile owners to request from their clients positive feedback that can optionally be shown, for marketing purposes, in profiles.

As promised in the last newsletter, a new WWA page -- http://www.proz.com/wwa -- was released this month. This page has made the process of collecting and displaying WWA feedback more convenient by allowing, for example, an outsourcer to provide positive feedback for several freelancers at once without visiting each profile. Translators are also able to request feedback from several outsourcers with just a few clicks.

Also this month, the interface for controlling display of WWA feedback in profiles, as well as the display itself, was improved.

Due in part to these improvements, more than 700 professionals received positive entries in April, increasing by approximately 15% the number of site users displaying positive feedback from clients in their profiles.

For more information, and to request feedback from your own satisfied clients, visit the new WWA center -- http://www.proz.com/wwa -- or see the recent forum discussion: http://www.proz.com/topic/101647

Notes: The WWA client feedback system is provided as a marketing tool for translators who wish to use it. Only positive feedback is possible. Use of WWA features is optional and it is possible to opt out of using ProZ.com's feedback systems (WWA and the Blue Board) entirely.

(8) Survey results: Most important factors for translators when accepting work from a new client
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Early this month, member MariusV asked in the forums: "What is the main attribute of 'the best translation agency' for you?"
Various responses were posted, which led to staff member Drew running a survey asking ProZ.com translators which factors were most important to them when determining whether or not to accept work from new clients.
Over 450 people responded to the survey, and a summary of the results is available. Go to: http://www.proz.com/freelancer_survey
To see MariusV's forum thread, go to: http://www.proz.com/topic/101450
Look in the May newsletters for results from a survey that asks a similar question to outsourcers: Which factors do you consider when deciding which freelancer to hire?
(9) Upcoming powwows: Berlin, Malta, Spain, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ProZ.com powwows are informal meetings among translators and interpreters living in a given area. In almost all cases, there is no fee - just pay for your own coffee or meal.

Sign up for a nearby powwow and bring your family members or friends. If you have not been to a powwow before, this could be the perfect time to meet your colleagues in person, exchange information and have fun.

Here is a list of powwows scheduled for the next 2 months:

(10) You have completed all 'required' sections of your profile. Consider going one step further.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are among those who have completed all profile fields marked 'required' but not all fields designated as 'encouraged'.
The 'required' fields are those without which a profile is not considered complete. You have completed all of those -- so congratulations on that! Going beyond that to complete all 'encouraged' fields (there are seven for now) will result in your profile being found in a higher percentage of web searches and ProZ.com directory searches. It will also help to ensure that information of interest to potential clients and colleagues -- like a CV, sample translations, etc. -- is also readily available. This can help to bring better results when it comes to networking or meeting new clients.
To complete all 'encouraged' sections of your profile, go to: http://www.proz.com/quick_profile?rfmp=nl&inx=1
If you need assistance completing any of the fields, please do not hesitate to enter a support ticket: http://www.proz.com/support
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(11) Your profile is missing 'years of experience' (which outsourcers can search by)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the new version of the ProZ.com directory (beta), outsourcers are able to search by years of experience. Currently, your profile does not indicate how many years of experience you have as a translator. Therefore, you may want to take a few seconds to enter this and other information: http://www.proz.com/quick_profile?rfmp=nl&inx=2
If you have any trouble updating your profile from this page, the ProZ.com support team is ready to help: http://www.proz.com/support
(12) New knowledgebase articles - technical tips for translators
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Member Claudia Alvis recently contributed a knowledgebase article listing some of her favorite web and software tools for translators. Have a look: http://www.proz.com/doc/1742

Also this month, Stanislaw Czech explains how to go about loading what you would need for work into a "pendrive" portable memory device. He wrote: "I work in various places and very often I chose not to carry a laptop... most often there are some computers available and the main problem is that to work I need my files and several applications I simply cannot do without. These huge problems however can be easily solved by means of a tiny pendrive..." See: http://www.proz.com/doc/1726

Got any tips for colleagues? Please share them using the articles knowledgebase. For submission guidelines, see: http://www.proz.com/translation-articles/pages/Submission-Guidelines
