It’s All About Engagement!
Traditional teaching engages some students but not all. Kagan is a revolutionary approach to teaching that actively engages every student.
Let’s look at the problems traditional teaching creates. Students sit in rows. The rule is no talking! The teacher presents new information or a new skill. To engage students, the teacher asks the class a question. One student responds at a time. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? So what’s wrong with that?
The first problem is we set our students against each other. When the teacher calls on Peter to answer, Susie lowers her hand in disappointment. Aaaah. But when Peter begins to falter, she shoots her hand back up. Waves it wildly. Pick me teacher! A subset of students compete for the opportunity to shine. A competitive class is not a brain-friendly learning environment.

O Ensino tradicional envolve alguns alunos, mas não todos. Kagan é uma abordagem de ensino revolucionária que envolve todos os alunos.
Vamos ver alguns problemas que o ensino tradicional cria. Os alunos se sentam em fileiras. A regra é não conversar! A professor apresenta a nova informação ou uma nova habilidade. Para envolver os alunos, a professor faz uma pergunta para a classe. Um aluno por vez responde. Parece familiar, não é? Então, o que está errado com isso?
O primeiro problema é que colocamos nossos alunos uns contra os outros. Quando a professora pede para Peter responder, Susie abaixa sua mão desapontada. Aaaaah! Mas quando Peter começa a hesitar, ela levanta a mão de novo. Balança bastante. “Me escolhe!” Um subconjunto de alunos competem pela oportunidade de brilhar. O próximo problema é que o aluno gasta pouco tempo ativamente envolvido. A professora está falando muito, a maior parte do tempo. Quando, finalmente, os alunos se envolvem, é um por vez. É como uma longa fila, esperando para se servir. Uma grande porcentagem da classe está em algum lugar entre parcialmente interessado e comatoso.

The story of Singapore’s economic success has been related many times over
and documented in countless articles and books. At one point, academics,
economists, and international observers began referring to the city-state’s
economic achievements, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, as a “miracle,”putting it among the highly successful East Asian economies of Japan, South Korea,Taiwan (China), and Hong Kong (China). The Singapore economy has undergone significant stages of development since the 1960s.
It has grown from its traditional role as a regional port and distribution center in the 1960s to an international manufacturing and service center in the 1970s and 1980s, and now into a center of science-based manufacturing and knowledge-intensive technical services. Much has been written to explain this success. Emphasis has been placed on the early adoption of an export-oriented strategy for industrialization, high savings and investment rates, a stable macroeconomic environment, and even sociocultural traits that support successful industrialization. This volume documents a less-explored aspect of Singapore’s economic development: it examines the transformation of the education and training system since the country’s independence in 1965 and how the process contributed to skills formation and, hence, economic change.
Led by the country’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s rapid economic progress since 1965 centers largely on the role of the state and the state-led economic policies that were so effectively implemented by the nation’s key financial and economic institutions. The foundation for sustainable growth was laid on a few basic principles: fiscal discipline; the use of price incentives in public service delivery; equitable sharing of the opportunities for economic progress; strong basic institutions to foster political stability, good governance, and the rule of law; and a well-functioning social contract. These elements of Singapore’s version of the East Asian development model were identified by development economists and politicians alike as the key to unlocking the complexities of underdevelopment.
Singapore’s economic transformation, commonly divided into three main
stages, was all the more spectacular when judged against the backdrop of the unpromising conditions at the time the country gained independence.

A História do sucesso econômico de Singapura tem sido relacionado muitas vezes e documentada em inúmeros artigos e livros. Em um determinado momento, acadêmicos, economistas e observadores internacionais começaram a referir as conquistas econômicas da cidade-estado, especialmente durante os anos 70 e 80, como um “milagre”, colocando-a junto às economias mais bem sucedidas do leste Asiático como Japão, Coréia do Sul, Taiwan e Hong Kong (China). A economia de Singapura foi submetida a estágios significativos de desenvolvimentos a partir dos anos 60.
Singapura cresceu de seu tradicional papel como um porto regional e centro de distribuição nos anos 60 para uma produção internacional e centro de serviços nos anos 70 e 80; agora num centro de produção científica e de serviços técnicos de alto conhecimento. Muito tem sido escrito para explicar esse sucesso. A ênfase foi colocada na adoção precoce de uma estratégia de industrialização voltada para a exportação, grandes economias e níveis de investimento, um ambiente macroeconômico estável e até qualidades socioculturais que reforçam uma industrialização bem sucedida. Este livro documenta um aspecto menos explorado do desenvolvimento econômico de Singapura: ele examina a transformação da educação e sistemas de capacitação desde a independência do país, em 1965, e como o processo contribuiu para a formação de habilidades e, consequentemente, a mudança econômica.
Conduzido pelo primeiro ministro do país, Lee Kuan Yew, o rápido progresso econômico a partir de 1965 centrou principalmente no papel do estado e políticas econômicas que foram tão efetivamente implantadas pelas principais instituições finaceiras e econômicas do país. A base para o crescimento sustentável se apoiava em alguns princípios básicos: disciplina fiscal, o uso de fomentos de custo na prestação de serviços públicos, divisão igualitária das oportunidades para o progresso econômico, instituições básicas fortes para promover a estabilidade política, boa governança e aplicação de leis; e um contrato social eficaz.
