Let me congratulate all of those who have helped to make this wonderful vision a reality.
But we gather here today not to celebrate a building. We gather to celebrate a man.
What is it that makes Lincoln such a seminal figure in our story? How is it that this man, born in the backwoods of Kentucky, with little formal education, homely and awkward, a man given to depression and wracked with self-doubt, might come to represent so much of who we are as a people, and so much of what we aspire to be?
Some of it has to do with the trajectory of his life. In his rise from poverty, his self-study and ultimate mastery of language and of law, in his capacity to overcome personal loss and remain determined in the face of repeated defeat - in all of this we see a fundamental element of the American character, a belief that we can constantly remake ourselves to fit our larger dreams.
Some of it has to do with the sheer energy of the man, the railsplitter, ax-in-hand, looking out at a frontier of hope and possibility. Lincoln believed deeply in the American spirit of innovation and exploration that accepts no limits to the heights to which our nation might reach.
In all of this - the repeated acts of self-creation, the insistence that with sweated brow and calloused hands and focused will we can recast the wilderness of the American landscape and the American heart into something better, something finer - in all of this Lincoln embodies our deepest myths. It is a mythology that drives us still.
And yet what separates Lincoln from the other great men has to do with something else. It's an issue of character that speaks to us, of moral resolve. Lincoln was not a perfect man, nor a perfect president. By modern standards, his condemnation of slavery might be considered tentative; his Emancipation Proclamation more a military document than a clarion call for justice. He wasn't immune to political considerations; his temperament could be indecisive and morose.
And yet despite these imperfections, despite his fallibility...indeed, perhaps because of a painful self-awareness of his own failings, etched in every crease of his face and reflected in those haunted eyes...because of this essential humanity of his, when it came time to confront the greatest moral challenge this nation has ever faced, Lincoln did not flinch. He did not equivocate or duck or pass the challenge on to future generations. He did not demonize the fathers and sons who did battle on the other side, nor seek to diminish the terrible costs of his war. In the midst of slavery's dark storm and the complexities of governing a house divided, he kept his moral compass pointed firm and true.
It serves us then to reflect on whether that element of Lincoln's character, and the American character - that aspect which makes tough choices, and speaks the truth when least convenient, and acts while still admitting doubt - remains with us today. Lincoln once said that "character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."
At a time when image all too often trumps substance, when our politics all too often feeds rather than bridges division, when the prospects of a poor youth rising out of poverty seem of no consequence to the powerful, and when we evoke our common God to condemn those who do not think as we do, rather than to seek God's mercy for our own lack of understanding - at such a time it is helpful to remember this man who was the real thing. Lincoln reminds us that our essential greatness is not the shadow of sophistication or popularity, or wealth or power or fleeting celebrity. It is the tree that stands in the face of our doubts and fears and bigotries, and insists we can do better.
Today we come to celebrate not a building but a man. And as that man called once upon the better angels of our nature, so is he calling still, across the ages, to summon some measure of that character, his character, in each of us, today.

Mas não nos reunimos aqui hoje para celebrar uma construção. Nós nos reunimos para celebrar um homem.
O que faz de Lincoln uma figura seminal em nossa história? Como pôde esse homem desajeitado, nascido nos rincões do Kentucky, tendo recebido pouca educação formal, dado à depressão e acossado pela falta de confiança em si mesmo, representar tão bem aquilo que somos enquanto nação e, ainda, o que aspiramos a ser?
Parte da resposta está no trajeto que percorreu em sua vida. Da superação da pobreza, do autodidatismo e do domínio da língua e da lei, da capacidade de manter a determinação diante de perdas e reiteradas derrotas, podemos ver um traço fundamental do caráter americano, uma crença de que podemos constantemente nos reinventar para que estejamos à altura dos nossos maiores sonhos.
Parte da resposta está também em sua absoluta disposição, a disposição de um desbravador que contempla a esperança e as possibilidades que a fronteira guarda. Lincoln acreditava no espírito americano de inovação e descobrimento que não aceita que se imponham limites às alturas que nossa nação possa alcançar.
Em tudo isso — nas repetidas ocasiões em que teve de se reinventar, na insistência que faz suar a fronte e calejar as mãos e fortalecer a vontade, com o que podemos cultivar as indômitas paisagens e paixões americanas para que se tornem mais dignas — em tudo isso Lincoln encarna nossos mitos mais fundamentais. Trata-se de uma mitologia que nos move ainda hoje.
Mas ainda, o que distingue Lincoln de outros grandes homens se reporta a outra questão; uma questão de caráter, de firmeza moral. Lincoln não era um homem perfeito, tampouco um presidente perfeito. Para os padrões modernos, a condenação que fazia à escravidão pode ser considerada hesitante. Sua Proclamação de Emancipação, mais um documento militar do que um claro chamado por justiça. Ele não era imune a ponderações de interesse político, seu temperamento podia assumir tons de indecisão e melancolia.
Ainda assim, apesar das imperfeições, apesar de sua falibilidade — de fato, talvez até mesmo em razão da aguda consciência de suas próprias falhas, entalhadas em cada ruga de sua face e refletidas naqueles olhos atormentados —, por causa de sua humanidade, quando chegou o momento de enfrentar o maior desafio moral que essa nação jamais enfrentou, Lincoln não recuou. Ele não se furtou à tarefa ou a transferiu a gerações futuras. Ele não demonizou os pais e os filhos que lutaram em nome do outro lado nem buscou diminuir os terríveis custos de sua guerra. Em meio a hora mais escura da história da escravidão e às dificuldades de governar uma Casa dividida, ele manteve firme seu senso moral.
Isso nos leva a refletir se aquele aspecto do caráter de Lincoln, e do caráter americano, que é capaz de tomar decisões difíceis e de falar a verdade mesmo quando ela é pouco conveniente, que é capaz de agir embora admita a dúvida, está conosco ainda hoje. Lincoln disse certa vez que “o caráter é como uma árvore e a reputação, como sua sombra. A sombra é o que nós pensamos a seu respeito, mas a árvore é o que realmente importa”.
Em tempos onde à aparência frequentemente é dado mais valor que à verdade, onde nossa política frequentemente aumenta distâncias em vez de diminuí-las, onde as chances da juventude deixar para trás a pobreza parecem não incomodar os poderosos, onde nós evocamos nosso Deus para condenar aqueles que não pensam como nós ao invés de buscar a misericórdia divina para nossa própria ignorância, em tais tempos é útil lembrar deste homem que lutou pelo que realmente importa. Lincoln nos lembra que nossa grandeza não está na sombra de sofisticação ou de popularidade, de riqueza, poder ou celebridade passageira. Ela está na solidez de caráter que enfrenta dúvidas, medos, intolerâncias e insiste que podemos fazer melhor.
Hoje nos reunimos para celebrar não uma construção, mas um homem. E assim como havia esse homem convidado outrora a exercitarmos nossas mais elevadas virtudes, ainda ele nos chama, através dos tempos, a encontrarmos um pouco desse caráter, seu caráter, em nós mesmos.

I am a Brazilian Portuguese native speaker and I have a Bachelor's degree as well as a Master's degree in Social Communication, which I earned from one of the most respected Faculties on this area in Brazil, Faculdade Casper Líbero (São Paulo). After receiving my Master's degree, I taught for a few years at the State University of Minas Gerais (UEMG, Minas Gerais), both on Marketing & Advertising and Journalism undergraduation courses. It all led me to develop academic writing skills, for a dissertation is a highly technical and specialised piece of work (given the fact that Social Communication is regarded as part of the Social Sciences in Brazil). Furthermore, I have published papers in scientific journals from Brazil and Colombia, and attended national and international congresses as a speaker. Meanwhile, I also obtained a postgraduate certificate on English to Portuguese translation, from Universidade Estácio de Sá (Rio de Janeiro). I also have experience on teaching ESL.
As you can see from the information above, my specialisation areas are primarily Advertising, Marketing and Journalism. But these subjects happen to develop affinity to other highly relatable areas, such as Social Science, Philosophy, Arts, Literature, Cinema, Graphic Novels/Comicbooks and Gaming, to mention some.
Translating is something I am intensely commited to because in the end it is a way to democratize culture, science and information.
