Noch vor wenigen Jahren galt E-Learning als die Bildungsform des 21. Jahrhunderts. Mittlerweile vermutet man, dass E-Learning die traditionellen Bildungsformen nicht ersetzen kann. Es ist lediglich als eine sinnvolle Unterstützung im Lernprozess zu sehen.
Durch Kombination verschiedener medialer Vermittlungsformen (hybride Lernarrangements) kann Lernen optimiert werden. Insbesondere Menschen, die lieber den PC und das Internet nutzen als Bücher lesen, können durch E-Learning viele Lerninhalte besser aufnehmen oder bereits bekannte Inhalte ergänzend und interaktiv erarbeiten. Zu weiteren Vorteilen des E-Learning gehören zweifellos die ökonomischen Aspekte. Die Lernenden sind räumlich und zeitlich unabhängig. Die Vermittlung von Lernstoffen kann also unabhängig von der persönlichen Anwesenheit geschehen.
Dank PC und Internet ist die Verteilung größerer Informationsaspekte machbar. Gerade diese ökonomischen Vorteile sind nicht zu unterschätzen. Denn „lebenslanges lernen“ (life-long learning) bedeutet meistens berufsbegleitendes Lernen, und da ist die Flexibilität hinsichtlich Ort und Zeit besonders wichtig.

Solo qualche anno fa l’elearning era ritenuto il metodo di apprendimento del 21esimo secolo, mentre oggi si pensa che non possa sostituire i metodi di formazione tradizionali.

L’uso combinato di differenti risorse multimediali (didattica ibrida) può rendere più efficace lo studio. In particolare, le persone che preferiscono usare computer e internet piuttosto che leggere libri possono, con l’elearning, recepire meglio molti contenuti o approfondire concetti già conosciuti e assimilarli in modo interattivo.
Gli aspetti economici appartengono senza dubbio agli altri vantaggi dell’elearning.
Gli studenti non hanno vincoli di orario e di luogo; l’insegnamento della materia può avvenire in modo indipendente dalla presenza fisica.
Computer e internet permettono di utilizzare un ventaglio di strumenti più ampio per la condivisione d’informazioni. E già solo questi vantaggi economici non sono da sottovalutare, perché la “formazione continua” (life-long learning) significa, il più delle volte, affiancare lo studio al lavoro e per questo la flessibilità di orario e di luogo è molto importante.
