Source text - English NORTH AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SPANISH LANGUAGE COMMENDS JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR FOR PRIDE IN SPANISH
New York, NY, August 31 – The North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE in its Spanish acronym) passed a resolution congratulating Justice Sotomayor for her pride in and defense of the Spanish language. ANLE president Gerardo Piña-Rosales notes that the resolution “recognizes her as a model for Hispanic Americans, and part of being a model is her belief in preserving the Spanish language.”
The board of directors of ANLE noted that the Sotomayor saga revealed many truths, Piña-Rosales added. “One truth needs to be stated boldly: Spanish in the United States is not a ‘foreign’ language. It is the second language of the country.”
Now that Sonia Sotomayor has taken her place as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, ANLE points out that almost overlooked by the media and others who scrutinized her qualifications is that this “wise Latina” is also a “proud Latina.” And one thing about which she is most proud is her knowledge of the Spanish language.
Her extraordinary qualifications for the Court are now recognized. Knowledge of another language – Spanish – may not be a judicial qualification, but it is very much a part of Associate Justice Sotomayor’s intellectual make up, heritage, educational experience and life. “Let there be no mistake about it – she wore her Puerto Rican heritage, her Latina identity and her Spanish language like badges of honor,” says Jorge Covarrubias, a member of the ANLE Board.
As the media so often pointed out, she grew up in a Spanish-speaking family in the Bronx, New York. A Spanish-dominant child, when she began her classes as Princeton University, she was initially shy about speaking English in class.
The media also highlighted her service on the board of directors of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund in New York City, now known as LatinoJustice PRLDEF. A board member for twelve years, she strongly supported PRLDEF’s language rights litigation.
PRLDEF sued several boards of education for ignoring non-English speaking students and demanded bilingual education or other similar methods of instruction. It also sued governments for not providing Spanish language assistance to those who sought government benefits to which they were entitled, e.g., medical benefits and food stamps. More recently, the organization has protected employees from being fired for speaking Spanish.
"Sonia Sotomayor makes a point of pronouncing her name correctly in Spanish, as well as those of her family and friends,” says César Perales, President and General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF. “That is one of the reasons that she has become a symbol of pride for so many of us."
Writing in the Education Week electronic newsletter, Spanish language education expert Mary Ann Zehr said that “Sonia Sotomayor, is someone with whom English-language learners may be able to identify in classroom discussions about current events.”
The Sotomayor story, according to ANLE, illustrated vividly the importance of Spanish not only to her but to the nation. ImpreMedia, parent company of many Spanish language publications throughout the country, joined with the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) to live stream the PBS NewsHour feed of Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings in Spanish.
“As public media, PBS and our member stations have a strong commitment to ensuring that citizens have the information they need to fully participate in our democracy,” said John Boland, PBS Chief Content Officer. Arturo Durán, CEO of ImpreMedia Digital, observed that “live transmission of the Supreme Court hearings is a critical outreach to the millions of Americans who strongly prefer to receive their news and information in Spanish.”
Few events have given so much attention to the Hispanic community and the Spanish language as the story of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor. Although few can rival Sotomayor’s achievements, many can take pride in her history of achievement and her pride in the Spanish language.

Nueva York, NY (31 de agosto de 2009).- La Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE) aprobó una resolución para felicitar a la jueza Sonia Sotomayor por haber defendido siempre el idioma español. El presidente de la ANLE, Gerardo Piña-Rosales, destacó que la resolución “la reconoce como modelo para los estadounidenses; parte de ese reconocimiento proviene de su lucha por la preservación del idioma español”.
La Junta directiva de la ANLE destacó que los antecedentes de Sotomayor habían puesto de manifiesto varias realidades. Piña-Rosales agregó: “Una de estas realidades debe mencionarse sin rodeos: el español no es una lengua ‘extranjera’ en los Estados Unidos. Es el segundo idioma del país en importancia”.
Ahora que Sonia Sotomayor ocupa ya el cargo de Jueza Asociada de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos, la ANLE destaca que esta “latina inteligente” es, además, una “latina orgullosa de su procedencia”; característica ésta que pasó prácticamente desapercibida a la prensa y a quienes se encargaron de examinar minuciosamente su currículum vitae. Sonia Sotomayor siente un profundo orgullo de sus conocimientos del idioma español.
Su vasta formación jurídica, que la cualifica para figurar como miembro de la Corte Suprema es ahora reconocida. Saber otro idioma —el español— puede no ser un requisito para formar parte del sistema judicial; sin embargo, constituye una parte intrínseca del carácter intelectual, la herencia, la experiencia educativa y la vida de Sotomayor. “No les quepa la menor duda: Sotomayor ha llevado siempre consigo su herencia puertorriqueña, su identidad latina y su idioma español como medallas de honor”, dijo Jorge I. Covarrubias, miembro de la Junta directiva de la ANLE.
Tal como conocemos por la prensa, Sotomayor se crió en el seno de una familia hispanohablante, en el Bronx neoyorquino. Al iniciar sus estudios en la Universidad de Princeton, se sentía incómoda, insegura, cuando hablaba inglés en clase, porque el español había sido su primera lengua en la infancia.
La prensa también destacó su labor en la Junta directiva del Fondo Puertorriqueño para la Defensa Legal y la Educación de la Ciudad de Nueva York, hoy conocido como LatinoJustice PRLDEF. Sotomayor fue miembro de esa Junta durante doce años, y en ella apoyó con firmeza las reivindicaciones presentadas por el PRLDEF sobre los derechos del idioma.
El PRLDEF demandó a varios consejos educativos por ningunear a estudiantes que no hablaban inglés y les exigió que ofrecieran educación bilingüe u otros métodos de instrucción similares. También denunció al Gobierno por no proveer asistencia en español a quienes solicitaban beneficios estatales, como prestaciones médicas o cupones de alimentos. En los últimos tiempos, la organización ha defendido a empleados que habían sido despedidos por hablar en español en sus puestos de trabajo.
Según la ANLE, la historia personal de Sotomayor representa vívidamente la importancia del español no sólo para ella, sino también para la nación. ImpreMedia, empresa matriz de varias publicaciones en español del país, se unió al Sistema Público de Televisión (PBS, por sus siglas en inglés) para transmitir en directo, en español, las vistas de confirmación congresuales de Sotomayor.
“Dado que somos un medio de prensa público, PBS y nuestras estaciones afiliadas se comprometen a garantizar que los ciudadanos cuenten con la información que necesitan para participar activamente de nuestra democracia”, dijo John Boland, Jefe de Contenidos de PBS. Arturo Durán, Director de ImpreMedia Digital, destacó que “la transmisión en vivo de las vistas congresuales de la Corte Suprema llega a millones de estadounidenses que prefieren recibir las noticias e informaciones en español”.
