Nay Sep 11, 2018

I say nay to plants around my workspace as I am not green fingered. However, my flat directly overlooks a very nice park so I have access to all the greenery I could conceivably wish for without the associated effort of trying to figure out how to keep it alive.

A chestnut, a plum tree, grapes and the neighbour's cherry tree Sep 11, 2018

With a view like that, I don't need pot plants, and I can't keep them alive anyway.

In december I sometimes try with a poinsettia - like me, they hate draughts. But I air the small space out regularly and forget to take the poinsettia with me... So when I come back and close the window, the plant shivers and sheds all its leaves in a couple of days!

I have a few hardy cactuses and ramblers that have survived for years in the kitchen and living room, which my husband waters occasionally. He is a gardener, a fruit and vegetable man, and not bothered with flowers apart from the spring bulbs. He has a wonderful vine slung across outside my window, with at least a dozen bunches of blue grapes and a wonderful pattern of leaves. The plum tree is delightful too, flowering in the spring and laden with Victorias in the autumn. All his apple trees in spring are a dream! They are a glorious sight now too, laden with fruit, but they are on the other side of the house. Around them he has a riot of marigolds and coriander in summer.

(And I have to admit I have acquired some very lifelike artificial poinsettias which come out of their box in December and NEVER shed their leaves!) The rest of the year I have a lovely glass bowl with poppies by a famous Danish designer. They could last a thousand years and more!

Yay Sep 11, 2018

I have green plants all over my apartment (a ZZ, a Calathea, an Areca, a Marginata) and some flower plants (orchids and violets) on my coffee table. I have been dreaming of a small vertical garden on my front terrace but unfortunately it faces west and receives full sun all afternoon. I had two small olive trees there but they were attacked by a pest and I gave them to a gardener to be treated. To the rear of the apartment I have a small terrace with views to a beautiful garden belonging to a hotel. The street I live on is lined with trees and I'm just a few steps away from a beautiful park.Collapse

That is a no, no in my house or workplace!! It is a mess all the time and money spent with a proper care for the plants.

Yes Sep 11, 2018

It's my partner who deals with them, it's nice to have them.

And the garden just outside is a great place for a quick break. I'll dead-head and weed for ten minutes then back to my translation.

Yay Sep 11, 2018

I say yay to the plants around me!
I have two gardens and I love sitting there and working on my pc when it's fresh outside.
I'm not a green-fingered but I really enjoy being surrounded by them...obviously, at a safe distance.

So, yes to plants around my workplace!

... and some of them have names, such as the "bad-mood plants" (jatropha cinerea) that only thrive when the conditions are juuust right, and "Herr Farn", the fern I got the same day as my last name of "fern".

Then again, I talk to the backyard mice and squirrels, so it's not surprising I name my plants. (German inside joke: I also ask the magpie if it is doing its taxes.)

Yes, and I want lots more. Sep 11, 2018

When my father lived out in the woods, he had a balcony at ground level entirely surrounded by plants. That's where he kept his workstation. No matter how hot it was outside, this area was always fresh and pleasant.
I plan on having an area like that, but I have to move to a house. Right now, I live in an apartment, and although it does have a pretty big balcony, there is no earth, so I must keep many vases around, which is still far from what I want.

When I didn't have much of a garden, I had a lot of house plants.
