FACE - Coping Strategies

F = Focus on what’s in your control

Fear and anxiety are inevitable; they are normal, natural responses
to challenging situations that feel uncertain and worrying.

You can’t control what happens in the future. You can’t control
Coronavirus itself or the world economy or how your government manages the situation. We have far more control over our behaviour. So our number one aim is to take control of our behaviour.

When a big storm blows up, the boats in the harbour drop anchor – because if they don’t, they’ll get swept out to sea. Dropping anchor doesn’t make the storm go away but it can hold a boat steady in the harbour, until the storm passes in its own good time.

Similarly, we may experience ‘emotional storms’: these can include unhelpful thoughts spinning inside our head, and uncomfortable or painful feelings whirling around our body. If we’re swept away by that storm inside us, the first practical step is to ‘drop anchor’, using the simple ACE guide.

• A = Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings
• C = Come back into your body
• E = Engage in what you’re doing

You can run through this ACE cycle slowly and peacefully 3 or 4 times. Please turn over to find out more!

A = Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings

Silently and kindly acknowledge your thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, sensation, urges.

Take the stance of a curious scientist, observing what’s going on in your inner world.

For example, “I am thinking that something bad is going to happen, which is making me feel scared and my tummy full of butterflies”.

C = Come back into your body

You could try some or all of the following, or find your own methods:

• Slowly push your feet onto the floor.
• Slowly straighten up your back and spine; if sitting, sitting upright and forward in your chair.
• Slowly press your fingertips together
• Slowly stretch your arms or neck, shrugging your shoulders.
• Slowly breathe in 1-2-3-4 and out 1-2-3-4

E = Engage in what you’re doing

Get a sense of where you are and refocus your attention on the activity you are doing.

• Look around the room and notice 5 things you can see
• Notice 3 or 4 things you can hear
• Notice what you can smell or taste or sense in your nose and mouth

Try to have a go at this ACE cycle slowly 3 or 4 times.

HaRaPiN – Mga Paraan ng Pagtugon sa Krisis

Ha = Hanapin ang mga bagay na kaya mong kontrolin

Natural lamang ang mag-alala ngayon. Ang takot at pagkabalisa ay hindi maiwasan, lalo na ngayon na marami ang mga sitwasyon na walang kasiguruhan at nakakabagabag.

Hindi mo pwedeng makontrol ang mga nangyayari ngayon o mangyayari sa hinaharap. Hindi mo kontrolado kahit ang Coronavirus o ang ekonomiya ng mundo o kung paano pangasiwaan ng iyong gobyerno ang problema. Ngunit ang isang bagay na pwede mong makontrol ay ang iyong pag-uugali. Dahil dito, ang iyong pangunahing layunin ay ang pagkontrol sa iyong kalooban.

Kapag dumarating ang malaking bagyo, ang mga bangka sa pantalan ay ibinababa ang kanilang mga angkla dahil kung hindi, ang mga ito ay aanurin sa karagatan. Ang pagbaba ng angkla ay hindi nakapagpapaalis ng bagyo ngunit kaya nitong panatilihin ang bangka sa pantalan hanggang sa lumipas na ang bagyo.

Gayun din naman, maaari kang makaranas ng mga “bagyo ng damdamin” – kabilang dito ang mga hindi nakatutulong na saloobin na naglalaro sa iyong kaisipan, at mga hindi magiginhawa o masasakit na pakiramdam na bumabalot sa iyong katawan. Kung ikaw ay maaanod ng bagyong iyan sa iyong kalooban, ang unang magagawang hakbang ay “ibaba ang angkla” gamit ang simpleng gabay na RaPiN.

• Ra = Ramdamin ang iyong mga emosyon at kilalanin ang iyong mga naiisip
• Pi = Piliing bumalik sa iyong katawan
• N = Nasaing pagtuunan ng pansin ang iyong ginagawa

Maaari mong ulit-ulitin ang RaPiN nang dahan-dahan at matiwasay nang 3 o 4 na beses. Mangyaring pakitingnan ang mga susunod na pahina para sa mas maraming impormasyon!

Ra = Ramdamin ang iyong mga emosyon at kilalanin ang iyong mga naiisip


Matahimik at totohanang kilalanin ang iyong mga naiisip, nararamdaman, naaalala, at ninanasa.

Maging tulad ng isang mausisang siyentista na nagmamatyag sa kung ano ang nangyayari sa iyong sariling mundo.

Halimbawa, “Iniisip ko na may masamang mangyayari kung kaya ako nakakaramdam ng takot at tila may mga paru-paro sa aking tiyan.”

Pi = Piliing bumalik sa iyong katawan

Maaari mong subukan ang ilan o lahat sa mga sumusunod, o maghanap ng sarili mong mga kaparaanan:

• Dahan-dahang itulak ang iyong mga paa sa sahig.
• Dahan-dahang iunat ang iyong likuran at gulugod; kung nakaupo, umupo nang tuwid at pasulong sa iyong upuan.
• Dahan-dahang pindutin ang mga dulo ng iyong mga daliri sa isa’t isa.
• Dahan-dahang mag-inat ng mga braso o leeg nang kinikibit ang mga balikat.
• Huminga nang malalim sa bilang na 1-2-3-4 at ilabas nang dahan-dahan sa bilang na 1-2-3-4.

N = Nasaing pagtuunan ng pansin ang iyong ginagawa

Magkaroon ng kamalayan sa iyong paligid at ibaling muli ang iyong pansin sa iyong ginagawa.

• Luminga sa iyong paligid at pumansin ng 5 bagay na iyong nakikita.
• Pumansin ng 3 o 4 na bagay na iyong naririnig.
• Pansinin ang iyong naaamoy, nalalasahan o nadarama sa iyong ilong at bibig.

Subukan nang paulit-ulit ang RaPiN nang dahan-dahan nang 3 o 4 na beses.

I am a bilingual of Filipino (Tagalog) and English. I have been translating using French, Spanish, Filipino and English. I have just recently finished my MA Translation Studies from Bangor University in Wales, United Kingdom. I do general translations as well as IT-, hotel/restaurant-, and religious-related texts.
