Mary, kidney recipient

Mary is always smiling, and her inherent charisma, enthusiasm and optimistic outlook are positively contagious. You would never know by looking at vibrant, energetic Mary that she was once in poor health, but talking to her tells a very different story. Because Mary wants the world to know about the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor, she freely shares the details of her kidney transplant journey, which began 30 years ago.

The American-born daughter of Chinese immigrants, Mary was diagnosed with renal agenesis, a rare and life-threatening genetic disorder characterized by a failure of the kidneys to develop, when she was just three years old. A kidney transplant was the only option to save Mary’s life. Neither of her parents was a match for living donation, so Mary was placed on the national transplant waiting list.

While she waited, Mary began home dialysis treatments and continued that exhausting routine until she received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor when she was five years old. Her donated kidney enabled Mary to have what she describes as an “extraordinary childhood” for six good years—until her new kidney began to fail.
