Machine Translations... Grrr May 21, 2007

This Sydney hostel offers the typical all about "US" in the English Section.... and then all about "GLI STATI UNITI" in the Italian and French sections... quite a diversion!

One can also contact the entire United States via this website - any takers?

Liberare l'accesso a Internet! Liberare i testimoni di bevanda!

It goes on... will machine translation never stop giving entertainment to so many...

Just a suspicion ... May 21, 2007

This is drawn from the Italian translation of 'Minority
Report' (Rapporto di minoranza), ie the science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. (Publisher: Mondadori.) It ispired a movie with same name, starring Tom Cruise, and directed by Steven Spielberg.

"E' di New York?" domandò Lisa.
"No" rispose Witwer. "Ho vissuto quasi sempre a Chicago. Qui abito in
albergo, uno dei grandi alberghi della città bassa. "

This is my back-translation:

"Are you from New York?", Lisa asked.
"No," Witwer replied. "I've been living mostly in Chicago. Here I'm staying in a hotel, one of the big hotels IN THE LOWER PART OF THE TOWN ..."

I couldn't find the original English version of 'Minority
Report', so I just have the Italian translation of the novel.

I suspect that the original text had 'downtown'...

A few additional mistranslations... May 21, 2007

The first one is about a kudoz question. Somebody was asking the translation of 'ente di bonifica' (bonifica = reclamation) into English. A translator suggested 'charitable organization'.

The second one is about me. It might have turned into a disaster, but I escaped miraculously at the very last minute, just before delivering my job to the client.
This happened when I had just started to use Naturally Speaking. The text contained the English word 'inoculated'. Accordingly, I

The second one is about me. It might have turned into a disaster, but I escaped miraculously at the very last minute, just before delivering my job to the client.
This happened when I had just started to use Naturally Speaking. The text contained the English word 'inoculated'. Accordingly, I pronounced the word 'inoculato' into the mike.

It was only at the very last minute that I realized that one 'o' was missing. So I discovered that Naturally Speaking's vocabulary contained all sort of taboo words ... !

For "What's on" in French, translated to "Ce qui est allumé"... haha, is the US lit up, or what?

Net of Holy Stone May 23, 2007

Menus in France are always cause for giggle. I have seen the following:

- chief's sheep (l'agneau du chef)
- flat eggs (oeufs sur le plat)
- greedy lost bread (pain perdu gourmand)
- raped carrots (???) (carottes rapées)

and my favorite:

Net of Holy Stone...

I'll leave you scratching your wee heads for a bit...

Waterproof pool... Jun 13, 2007

Last summer in France I read on the entrance sign of a swimming pool that the pool was "security proof" pour "piscine sécurisée mais non surveillée" - secured (fence, etc) but unsupervised pool.
How they came up with such a translation ? no idea !
