Gennadiy Could you give me some context for this please? " "
Vladimir Dubisskiy Mar 21, 2005:
It does not really matter "Southern" or not; it's Southern for the US, that's it. But this 'male pattern' exists in every country and probably in every culture (human culture:-)), i believe.
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 21, 2005:
This will surely have to approximated. I cannot imagine a decent equivalent to any of the Southern characters in Russian culture or the realities of Russia today. Don't have time to take a stab at it right now, so good luck!

Мужик

Свой/чужой, не знаю, но когда слышу good ol' boy, почему то вспоминаю мужика в фуфайке и валянках.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Mikhail Kropotov : may fit some contexts, but "relaxed or informal manner" and "мужик" don't go well together

\"pravilnij muzhik\" features:
- informal manner
- strong loyalty to family and friends
- intolerant point of view (and, quite often, an anti-intel. bias)
so it fits \"good ol\' boy\" :-))

\"svoj (v dosku) muzhik\", \"nash\"

\"molotok\" (this is simply for \"molodets\" but thia kind of a male can be easily characterized as \"molotok\" by those who like him)

Но этот ответ совершенно не подходит, если он задан в контексте следующего вопроса, где вообще вся фраза приобретает совершенно иную окраску.
