I'm afraid I'm totally out of my depth here. Can anyone help with the phrase above?
Context: description of the architecture of Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul.
L'evoluzione di questo dispositivo consiste nella progressiva erosione degli spigoli della piattaforma cubica su cui "giace" la cupola giustinianea.
Questa sperimentazione procede secondo due direttrici: da un lato l'emersione dei grandi pennacchi di trapasso dal rettangolo/quadrato al cerchio; dall'altro XXX la compenetrazione della semisfera nello spazio dell'aula XXX. Questa delicata operazione rischia di portare la cupola troppo in basso con un effetto di schiacciamento dello spazio

Hi, if you are looking for an "explanatory" translation, this might spark some ideas. The space between the two is compressed and the hemisphere ends up "invading" the volume of the hall. HTH
