Italian term

linee di forza

Italian to English Other Geography maps
These are lines on a topographical map, but they are not contour lines. As described in the paragraph below, they mark out the main landforms. As far as I have been able to discover "lines of force" and "force lines" both refer to magnetism, but I as I understand it that is not directly relevant here. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks!

topographical features

I think he is using the term figuratively and not as a technical term, because, the "linee di forza" in Italian are also the "lines of force" which describe a magnetic field. I first thought of suggesting just "the main contours" but it doesn't quite describe what follows.

Note from asker:
Hi Jim, Yes I came to the same conclusion that it was probably figurative and thought of something like main contours, but was unconvinced. I think topographical features should work perfectly - thanks very much!
