This is from a text describing instruments available for a Renaissance/Baroque music course (harpsichord section):
cembalo francese a due manuali, due registri di 8' e uno di 4', estensione Sol0-Mi5
I have this as a French double-manual harpsichord with two 8' registers and one 4' register. I am not at all sure, however, that "estensione" should be "extension", and I am also not sure Sol and Mi should be used instead of G and E.
I did see "ravalement" [a French term used in English]defined as "the extension of the original range of a harpsichord," but I am not sure it is correct, either.
I hope someone out there knows more than I do about how harpsichords are constructed and the correct terminology in this instance.
