Japanese term

バックヤード的な部分

Japanese to English Other Tourism & Travel
Talking about the author's impression after taking a tour of an opera house:
・良かったが、少しあっさりしていた。
もっとバックヤード的な部分が見れるかと思った。

Does anybody have any idea what they mean by バックヤード的な部分??

Thanks.

Behind-the-scenes

I don't think the author is referring to "backstage" as much as they are referring to "a look behind the scenes," of which the backstage area is a part. Other areas that might be of interest in a theater include the lighting and sound mixing areas, dressing rooms, etc.

disagree Naikei Wong : バックヤード的な is meant to describe something being (usually) ignored or less-than-attractive. "Behind the scence" is not necessarily that. Sometimes it is deliberately brought up to add "fun" or appeal. Consider "I'll take a backstage/BTS job".

disagree Duncan Adam : バックヤード的 just doesn't seem likely to refer to dressing rooms etc, I'd have thought. It's got to be a physical place, whereas 'behind the scenes' suggests the things that are going on out of sight more than the place.

something like a backyard

Isn't the author just saying he was expecting to find a big open area backstage?
Peer comment(s):

agree Shawn Morse : I agree that the author was disappointed to not find a large open area backstage.

disagree Marc Ward : I'm not positive... but the 部分 in バックヤード的な部分が見れるかと implies to me that the author already knew something of what they were going to see, and didn't get to see it.

agree Naikei Wong : the connotations of バックヤード的な should be preserved
