Norwegian term

uten å trekke seg

Norwegian to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy report about a child in care
Familien hjelper gutten til å delta i lek om hverdagslige situasjoner, delta i samhandling uten å trekke seg unna hvis det er konflikter eller noe ikke lystbetont

obviously related to my preceding question, I am looking for a stylistically acceptable way of translating "delta i samhandling uten å trekke seg ".
"Participate in interaction without withdrawing", to me, sounds too forced and like a sporting event.

without feeling anxious/shy/nervous

If you feel like it is too strong, you can rephrase it to: "taking part in social situations without feeling any anxiety/shyness..."

"Withdrawal" is a term in psychology, which means something else, related to addiction.
Example sentence:

... helping the person to engage in a large social situation without feeling anxiety.

without pulling back

(Sorry, I should have edited my previous answer instead of hiding it, and I can't seem to change it).

Maybe pulling back would work better?

Or without withdrawing emotionally?
