Norwegian term

bikker

Norwegian to English Bus/Financial Fisheries
Vi ser at vi i begge testene over «bikker» verdien under kjøttvekten for fisk på 3,0 og 4,0 kg.

This has to do with models for calculating the value of fish.

Bingo! Thanks Paul - I just had a bit of a brain blockage there - it all makes sense to me now - must appreciated :-)
Paul Armitage Mar 22, 2018:
'over' refers to something above in the text I believe it's saying "In the experiments(?) above, we see that the value dips below the 'kjøttvekt' for fish weighing 3.0 and 4.0 kg".
Diarmuid Kennan (asker) Mar 22, 2018:
Thanks Paul But what about the word 'over'? If that was deleted, the sentence would make sense to me in the way you describe.
Paul Armitage Mar 22, 2018:
a value being reduced, i.e. under/below, not over? With 'under' in the sentence, doesn't it mean a value is dipping below or has dipped below the 'kjøttvekt'? As in the comparable sentence "Oljeprisen i ferd med å bikke under 42 dollar per fat."

I would ignore the second 'vi' in translation. Happy to make "dips below" an answer if it makes sense.
Diarmuid Kennan (asker) Mar 22, 2018:
I don't understand Thanks both for your suggestions, but the sentence still makes no sense to me - "Vi ... over «bikker» verdien under kjøttvekten...." Could there be a typo?

the value dips below / the value is pushed below

In the test/experiment referred to in the text, a value "dips below" the 'kjøttvekt' for fish weighing 3.0 and 4.0 kg. You could keep the experimental sense of the Norwegian phrase by using some combination of "the value is/has been pushed below". My understanding of 'bikke' here is something of a nudge, such that the value is reduced a little below the 'kjøttvekt'). A native speaker might want to comment though.
Example sentence:

For either firm, that will occur at the point that its residual value dips below zero.

... and repeating the analysis until the p value dips below the 0.05 threshold...

agree Michael Ellis : "is just below" might sound better

Thanks. Good call. I should have added the text might refer to a chart or figure of some kind, in which case the translation should best reflect what is happening on the chart. I somehow imagined a curve or bar dipping below a certain value.

tips over

Bikke something is to just tip over. Bikke 60 is to reach the age of 60.
