A new possible translation I have spoken to a psychologist (a Norwegian one). Her suggested translation, in a plainer language, is: ... the child's ability to regulate his or her (its) arousal and basic emotions. This is what is meant, she says.

Hvis du kunne fått inn aktivering i stedet for arousal i den norske teksten, med evt. henvisning til engelsk begrep i fotnote el.l. ville det løftet kvaliteten en smule. I tillegg til å fikse på "regulator". Ja, det finnes ekstremt mye kvasioversettelser og ukontrollert miks av engelske og norske begreper blant fagfolkene på dette feltet. Har nettopp holdt på med det et år, og revet meg mye i håret av forelesere og professorer ;)

Very technical language I agree with you Per that it may sound very un-Norwegian. To mee it looks like a text that has taken or translated a lot from English. Norwegian specialists in this field probably read most of the literature in English, and as far as I know very little is done to change this among the translator specialists here in Norway. However, in this case, the text is a mixture of strictly medical and psychological nomenclature. By the way, I don't think we are supposed to understand much of it, anyway!

This is supposed to be Norwegian? Per-Egil would have a field day with this. Language is supposed to promote understanding, not preclude it.
