"....the basic values of society/the company/etc". Unless already made obvious in the preceding text, it would be necessary to state whose "basic values" is being referred to here.

This is actually in reasonably common use in English. Another term that often fits is "basic values", as suggested by Brigid. I think both these terms should be in the glossary. However, in the context, I thought Paul's suggestion was a very good solution.

: I like this one best, but as with Brigid's suggestion, it is neccessary to mark somewhere in the text whose values we are dealing with (corruption is in fact built on another system of values which are just less politically correct or morally defensible.)
