Discussion

Fabiazur (asker) Aug 11, 2010:
My statement says "i declare .... " I signed it and a notary says that the illegible signature is mine then her seal follows. The " COLEGIO DE ESCRIBANOS" says She, the notary, is in fact a certified notary then a stamp follows.( the notary first studied law and then got a kind of license to be a notary, most of the time is inherited from a member of the notary`s family). I assume Association of Notaries is correct but wanted to know if professional translator use a different name for he institution. Thanks to all! I am sorry i did not find it in the glossary
Henry Hinds Aug 10, 2010:
Not exactly, Ruth A "colegio" can be a professional association or a school for little kids, but NEVER a law school.

Again, check it out and learn the difference.
Ruth Rubina Aug 10, 2010:
Exactly! That is why my option was a Law School - it is all depends where the document will be used.
Henry Hinds Aug 9, 2010:
Difference Ruth, there is a world of difference between a US Notary (only requires knowing how to read and write, only witnesses signatures) and a Civil Law Notary in Latin America and other countries (must be a lawyer plus special training, draws up complicated documents and records them).

Check it out and learn the difference.
Ruth Rubina Aug 9, 2010:
I am a notary and I didn't go to school for that.
Entry text
AllegroTrans Aug 9, 2010:
How can it be a law school? - a Notary is still a Notary, i.e. a specific profession and the asker's text makes it clear that the subject matter is notarization. Even in the US a Notary has to be sworn and admitted before he/she can practice
Ruth Rubina Aug 9, 2010:
It is all depends where this text will be used.
In the United States everybody can be a Notary without going to school for that.
Maybe it should be Law School and not what is mentioned in the link.
AllegroTrans Aug 9, 2010:
It's already in the glossaries.

In Argentina, Notariado is a career you study after you become a lawyer, first you become a lawyer, then you study to be a 'Escribano' and you become a Notary Public, and then you either inherit the registry nbr from a relative or buy it.
Peer comment(s):

agree Laureana Pavon : I agree with the translation, but in Córdoba (Argentna) you don't have to be a lawyer to be a notary. In fact, if you first become a notary and then get your lawyer's degree you must renounce your notary licence to practice law.

Thanks. I think that is true at the Catholic University but not at the state university.

Used in the City of London with the Worshipful prefix and close to the Spanish root-word.

Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : too country-specific to England to be a suitable translation---term asked for is NOT UK
11 hrs
Coincidentally, you have inverted the UK Notaries' Society to Society of Notaries.
