French term

au câble

French to English Tech/Engineering Petroleum Eng/Sci Natural gas storage

What sort of cable?

Does someone actually descend by cable - I can't imagine, or is this simply an electric cable connected to some sort of sensor?

TIA Chris.

Discussion

meirs May 28, 2011:
Term: travail au câble Google finds books (Complétion et reconditionnement des puits: programmes et modes opératoires) in the oil well context. Seems to be translated from English - so original should reveal the EN term (see section 3.1.4. of the book).
Bashiqa (asker) May 28, 2011:
In an underground saline cavity, not that tells us very much!
chris collister May 28, 2011:
It is rather ambiguous, isn't it? I think the best you can do is either get clarification from the client or translate as is under the assumption/hope that the reader will have sufficient context to know what the author is on about! It all depends on where and how big this water/gas interface is. If it's 1000m down and 5cm in diameter, then it's unlikely to be a human intervention!

wireline or wire rope

please check definitions , and decide which one fits

Wire rope
A cable composed of steel wires twisted around a central core of fibre or steel wire to create a rope of great strength and considerable flexibility. Wire rope is used as drilling line (in rotary and cable-tool rigs), coring line, servicing line, winch line, etc. It is often called cable or wireline. However, wireline is a single slender metal rod, usually very flexible. Compare wireline.

Wireline
A small-diameter metal line used in wireline operations; also called slick line. A system in which a flexible cable and reel is used to lower log or maintenance equipment down a well, rather than a rigid drill string, with considerable savings of equipment, manpower and time.

findings

wireline n: a slender, rodlike or threadlike piece of metal usually small in diameter, that is used for lowering special tools (such as logging sondes, perforating guns, and so forth) into the well. Also called slick line.
