: Reference is fine. This is the correct translation, because it specifically says the "top flight" team, differing it from Under-21's, Olympic Team, etc. The "main"/"regular" team when talking about it in the press, that go play the UEFA/FIFA matches.

: I'm definitely used to hearing "senior" in football (basketball is a 3ry sport in the UK). We often just say the "national team" or sometimes the "full team" but both only as juxtapositions to "under 23s", "under 21s", etc.

insisto, todos son casos en los que se diferencia entre categorías. En el caso de los derechos de estas retransmisiones, parece oportuno distinguir con precisión.
No sé si senior sería impreciso (ver referencia), quizás incluso puede ser una buena respuesta. Parece que full se corresponde mejor con absoluta, a tenor de los resultados y de las dudas que hay en otros prozianos. Es llamativo lo poco que sale en la wiki senior en estas páginas y en cambio, absoluta es muy frecuente y, sin duda, un término reconocible para la afición.

In my mind your saying both teams accept players under 21, the former exclusively (so I guess you're talking about an under 21 team?) and the latter may include players under and over 21 years, i.e. the "senior" team. This seems self-evident, so I don't see what's your point?
All "under" categories are junior categories and the category open to all ages is "senior".
We then use "over 40", "over 50" etc, for what you might be confusing with "senior" categories.
Me preguntaba si hay otra forma de decirlo en inglés más precisa que senior y ha aparecido full national team, con muy buenas coincidencias.
Resulta clara y no deja dudas con el límite de edad... Y como decía, en este caso se debe precisar que se trata de la absoluta porque debe haber derechos televisivos en juego. Y parece que como senior puede resultar inexacto, es mejor poner full o highest category.
