crab apples

It would appear that this is a type of crab apple - not typically an eating fruit, because it's normally v sour, but used in preserve making because of high pectin content, and also in cider.

Malus florentina is a kind of crab apple, as in the link I posted above, but not all crab apples are the florentina variety.
