Der Longhitter sollte vorlegen um den Bunker mitten auf der Fairway zu vermeiden.
...and later...
Der schwächere Spieler sollte auf das riesige Vorgrün vorlegen und mit Chip und Putt sein Par zu spielen versuchen.
What are these players being advised to do? The dictionaries have plenty of suggestions concerning 'vorlegen' as a transitive verb, but relatively few for its use as an intransitive verb.
Thanks in advance. AJS

The German seems to be a translation of this commonly used English expression.

: same thing, seems to be more common alright, "to play" short" + "golf" gets fewer googles. I'd understand lay up, but it would never occur to me to use it, Whatever that means.// "lay it up short" (a combination of both) also works.

"Short" would work in Andrew's second case: lay up short of the very large (or wide) apron (or fringe) and try to make par (or get down in 2) from there with a chip and a putt. "Lay up" can stand alone in the first case.

play it short
e.g. sometimes, rather than hitting the ball as far as you can, it's advisable to choose a shorter club and play short of your target so as to avoid a hazard, e.g. water, bunkers...
