Russian term

наводиться именно на излучение РЛС

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Military / Defense descriptioon of an anti-aircraft defence system
I need some help with this phrase. I have found that РЛС is радиолокационная станция but I am not quite sure how to best translate наводиться in this case.

Here's the context:

"У Витязя пункт боевого управления находится отдельно от радиолокационной установки. Это означает, что если противник применит ракету, которая наводиться именно на излучение РЛС, боевой расчет выживет."

So far I have:
This means that if the enemy uses a rocket/missile which is attracted by radar emissions, the combat unit will survive.

How does this sound? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

@ The Misha: Good point! А эти ракеты реагируют только и именно на излучение РЛС? Ведь источником излучения могут быть и другие объекты… Oh, Rachel's answer makes the distinction: radar-seeking vs. heat-seeking.
Rachel Douglas Nov 10, 2013:
Misha, Sorry - didn't see there was a Discussion section, before I posted. But you might have posted "HARM" as a translation. Anyway, I put "radar-seeking missile", which is another generic for the same.
The Misha Nov 10, 2013:
They are actually called anti-radiation missiles ARM or HARM in military parlance, such as AGM-88 and similar. See here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-88_HARM
ViBe Nov 10, 2013:
@ Sarah: Your understanding is technically correct, but the wording is not terminologically idiomatic: the right terms are “homing,” as suggested by several colleagues, or “(target) acquisition.” Both may work so you can "hit" your translation "target." ;)
ViBe Nov 10, 2013:
The grammar in the RU source is flawed: It should read, "если противник применит ракету, которая наводится" (no "мягкий знак" is needed).

radar-seeking missile

Can be named HARM, for "high-speed anti-radiation missile", but if you're speaking descriptively, as in your context, you can call it a "radar-seeking missile" (by analogy with, and as a opposed to, a heat-seeking missile).

Example:
"A U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter flying over Iraq's southern no-fly zone fired a radar-seeking missile at an Iraqi radar site Tuesday morning, Pentagon officials said. Pentagon officials said the HARM missile was fired near Basra..."

it is precisely within the range of the X station radar beams

The sentence means that Vitaliy's command position or attack position is separate from the station, and if the enemy attacks the radar station, his position will survive because the missile won't find them. They will not be the target.

In this context, the phrase should read: the racket is aimed exactly at the area within the rage of the X station radar beams.
Peer comment(s):

disagree ViBe : the "range" is irrelevamt here / А при чём тут "Виталий"?! Кличко, что ли?! Речь о "Витязях" = авиагруппе высшего пилотажа ВВС РФ!!!

disagree The Misha : This almost reads like some kind of Russian mafia crime fiction: Vitaliy's command position, this rAcket. And of course it misses the actual point altogether.

disagree Natalie : Absolutely unacceptable

Peer comment(s):

agree ViBe : "homes in on" is correct. / not necessarily "enemy" (radar) / Adding "precisely" for "именно" might be a good idea, b/c the Vityaz’s Command Post is also a source of heat, but the en missile in question is programmed to acquire radar beams only.

anti-radiation missile (ARM)

or smart/precisely guided anti-radiation missile

An anti-radiation missile (ARM) is a missile which is designed to detect and home on an enemy radio emission source. Typically these are designed for use against an enemy radar, although jammers and even radios used for communication can also be targeted in this manner.

neutral Rachel Douglas : No vote, because it's not your suggestion. The Misha posted this option under Discussion and I also mentioned it with my answer. Earlier you posted a different, convoluted version, then after Misha and I mentioned this one, you deleted yours & posted it.

we all are in the way to find the exact military termonology. it's the term "anti-radiation missile" is the most commonly used ones in defense.
