long time no see Proz pals, here's one from Wallachia, Rožnov actually - something like a hrkač....

text:

Tento rapač obsluhoval kostelník přímo na kostelní věži. V čase velikonočním, když podle tradice kostelní zvony odlétaly do Říma – nahradil je od Zeleného čtvrtku do Bílé soboty zvuk tohoto rapače – a že ho bylo řádně slyšet!

Not arguing but... ... if I Google for images of wooden ratchets, I get a few pictures of "rapač".

Not always - this is what a rattle looks like http://www.soundtravels.co.uk/p-Wooden_Football_Rattle__Doub... - if you say 'ratchet' most people imagine this: http://toolmonger.com/2008/03/04/black-decker-tri-ratchet/ . A baby's rattle is as you describe, but not in this case. Wikipedia is not always to be trusted.

No Gerry, Rad is not getting confused... ...for Rad, the "rattle" is a 'closed' thingie with some bits inside to make the noice. "Rapač" is not one of them.

In the UK at least this is better known as a 'rattle' - used to be used at football grounds, and policemen used to have them as well. Maybe that is where Rad is getting confused. neutral Rad Graban (X) : I really don't think "rapáč" is "hrkačka". It may be in Czech, but definitely not in Slovak.//Indeed, and Czech and Slovak are just soooo different - Czech "rapáč" v. Slovak "rapkáč". :)

Indeed, but this is from Rožnov, which is in the Czech Republic, not Slovakia :) = look at the above article quote: 'rapáče (dřevěné hrkačky)'
