Change log

Dec 5, 2005 15:29: Monika Coulson changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Sherefedin MUSTAFA, Eva T

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Eva T Dec 7, 2005:
You are using an Albanian professor who does not know the correct spelling of the word “waiter” in Albanian? Wow, he certanly did not get the title as a professor in an Albanian university. Ok, I am opening a thread about this.
Eva T Dec 7, 2005:
This is so pathetic Irene. You say above"the freelancer we worked with certainly lacks proficiency” and now you are doing the Editing process yourself, who does not speak a word in Albanian??? Wow, I find this Astonishing!
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
Irene,
It is not about wasting my/our time. It is about doing it right.
I would be more than happy to recommend you a few translators from ProZ.com, or you can post this as a job and choose them based on their credentials. Thank you :)
irene888 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2005:
thanks for your cooperation. maybe you could advise us on the right person to address with translation tasks
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
And, by the way, the correct spelling is "kamerier."
Any Albanian professor of Linguistics should know this and/or at least will know the right source to find it.
irene888 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2005:
The freelancer we worked with certainly lacks proficiency. We shall choose a better one next time. But still we can't pay double, so we decided at least to proofread the text.
Sorry for waisting your time(
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
and a book (which is a must for any linguist) called "Drejtshkrimi i gjuhës shqipe".
Again, it is risky for anyone involved to undertake a serious project like this (Ectaco Dict.) without any knowledge of the Alb. Lang.
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
No Irene, there is a Standard Albanian Language, that is being used since the '70. I already told you in one of my emails. All your translators/editors need is some knowledge of the Albanian grammar, a dictionary called "Fjalor i shqipes së sotme" and...
irene888 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2005:
sorry, I misspellt "waiter"
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
You say the translation done by your native Alb. translator leaves much room for improvement. Why don’t you hire someone here in ProZ.com?(I am not talking about myself,I am busy & not looking for new clients.) There are a lot of excellent translators he
irene888 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2005:
The thing is that there are no generally accepted standards in Albanian.
The linguist we found lacks the knowledge of special terms and some cases are dubious even for the Albanian professors working on the Albanian spellcheck.
e.g. Is it "Kamarier" or ""Kamerier" for "waitor"? The question is still open.
Monika Coulson Dec 7, 2005:
Irene, Editing is an important part of a translation and IMO, it should not be done by unpaid volunteers, but by a serious native speaker editor. BTW, you told me that you found a linguist in St.-Petersburg, who you were going to use. What happened then?
irene888 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2005:
The thing is that we have a translation from a Native Albanian translator, but we are currently proofreading this translation (as it leaves much to ne desired).
As for the term "Milky Way", we found variations in the google and in the dictionary by Ramazan Hysa, that's why we needed a professional answer.

Why don't you hire a professional translator

but rely on getting a free translation? KudoZ as you know, is a service to help translators with a difficult term while in their translation project? All these past days you are asking for free translation and I really doubt that you speak a word in Albanian...

Please get serious now and hire a native speaker to do your translation or editing or whatever you are doing.

Sincerely,
Eva
Peer comment(s):

agree Monika Coulson : I have also suggested to Irene that she hires a professional editor to check the Ectaco translation she is working on. It is very risky to make decisions based on unpaid volunteers.
