thank u everyone Grazie mille to all of you! I went with Sarah's answer b/c I felt it fit the best. I wish I could give you all a point as you were correct :)

Murcaninglish :-) I think AE tends to be more simple and straightforward than BE. Certain high-sounding words and twisted expression do seem weird in AE, I have noticed. I'm not a native speaker of either (I learned English in sunny California, though, but also have a Cambridge certification) so I cannot be an expert but I think that my looking from the outside may give me an unbiased comprehensive view of the matter. So, what I see is that AE dosn't like sophisticated terms and tortuous expressions

And if they sound odd in Italian... ....the translator's job is make them sound odd in English. Especially since, as you admit, the "oddness" is intentional.
NicoleRZ (asker) Sep 11, 2010:
:) lol, thanks Tom. I realize that they are supposed to be odd... but they are still just so... odd
Tom in London Sep 9, 2010:
BUt.....Nicole... those phrases are *meant* to sound odd! No offence intended, but maybe you Murcans just don't do our European irony..... :)
NicoleRZ (asker) Sep 9, 2010:
I was considering... arduous ruminations prior to posting but seemed so... well... incomprehensible... but as you mention Tom, the author uses a lot of phrases that are really... odd. I'd really like terms that are a little more commonly used but not sure if that's possible.

the slightly absurd, elaborate phraseology is wholly intentional. It perfectly captures the ponderous portentousness of the spectacle the reviewer is describing.

Italian term (edited): ardue Dementia Satyr

nocturnal ruminations

Maintains the cant.

rumination (plural ruminations) (psychology) negative cyclic thinking; persistent and recurrent worrying or brooding

Given the fast-heavy nature of Today is the Day - I thought 'ruminations' created the image of a dark, rebellious, introspective youth.

'Nocturnal' ties in the adjective 'lucubration' - intense and prolonged study or meditation; especially, late at night with 'ruminations.'
