Sure Pauley, the story told by the patient in the chair is OK... the context is that its one thing to be present in events that involve brother, fathers, wives bla bla bla....and yet another to just hear about what happed.... the simple fact the dear ones are not present gives the event/situation/story or whatever...less impact. It tones down some of the realty.

I would use cushioned, but would add "impact". "... the impact of the differences ... is cushioned because they are telling you about it."

I'd probably use 'talk' (the famous 'talk therapy') and turn the entire sentence around into something like:

or 'are more pronounced' (though I prefer 'seem')
