History Sep 27, 2007

My favourite issue and quite a good text about Jewish life in Klodzko before 1945. I wish I had more of this.

A mix... Sep 27, 2007

....Today I have a mix of medical instruments and heavy duty literary stuff...

For me it is a mix every day. Btw I like to change, and I am happy to work on completely different subjects, otherwise I get really bored!

Good question and interesting results! Sep 27, 2007

This question should definitely appear on a regular basis!

I'd say 80% - 85% of my workload is finance or legal.

Yesterday I finished translating a syndicated loan agreement and other related documents.

Today I'm working on a bank's quarterly report.

Tomorrow I'll be working on an interesting academic text about the history of watchmaking and I have a few medical reports lined up for next week!

Legal always involves another subject Sep 27, 2007

I said I am working on a legal translation, which is true every day. However, legal translations have to have a subject, so the second subject would usually be IT or technical (and is today).

Art Sep 27, 2007

I am surprised so few are working on art translations...

Having just finished a huge translation in literary criticism, I am now working on a photography yearbook.

And as for the coming weekend - well, I am going to attend a Powwow, of course!

Regards, and have a pleasant weekend,

Diana

Scientific Sep 27, 2007

90% of what I do is scientific (Clinical trials, SOPs, Expert’s Reports, etc).

Speaking of science, I know the Quick Polls are billed as “unscientific” but my scientific, inquisitive mind would like to break down the group, currently 18.6%, who have answered “I’m not working today!”

My question would be: does the exclamation mark mean, “I’m not working today, great!” or “I’m not working today, help, I need work!”

I hope for the good

To answer your question, the exclamation mark means "I`m not working today, great!", but it may mean "I´m not working today, help, I need work!" if no work arrives by next Friday; a free week is always welcomed!

Nice weekend to all of you
Marina

History/Academic Sep 27, 2007

I'm working on a literary translation. Actually an academic text (which may or may not qualify as literary, depending on my mood).

My guess is that at least a third of the respondents either marked "other" (as I did) or marked something that doesn't quite fit (as you appear to have done, Rebecca).

I know the polls can't possibly list enough categories, but most of my work falls under "other" in this poll. I do lots of translating for a large university that is currently undergoing a massive curriculum revision, much of which needs to be reported in English to accrediting associations. What category is that?

And I also do a lot of work in History, both for the History department of that university (including student papers for a recent symposium) and books. I wouldn't call any of it "literary." Today I have no other pending jobs hanging over my head, so I'm back to my current book, on Caribbean history.

I would love that text, Sonja! I wonder, are there are enough others translating history to make that a field for future polls? Or, can anyone think of a broader field that would include either of the areas I've mentioned in this post?

Jane

Literary -- as always Sep 27, 2007

Isn't it neat how we all have our specialties, likes, and dislikes? Over the years I've been able to whittle down my work to what I love doing most -- literary translation. I just finished a Spanish "Harry Potterish" book into English, and today I've just begun a thriller novel. I couldn't fathom having to deal with financial reports, contracts, or appliance manuals, although I've done plenty of them along the way. As we all know, at times we can't afford to be picky.

This is a fascinating poll, and just proves to me once again that human diversity is what makes this world such a beautiful tapestry, as it were. Imagine if we all worked (or liked to work) in the same specialty! Life as a translator would be awfully boring, not to mention dreadfully competitive.

A technical marketing brochure for rotary extrusion blow molding systems. Talk about a mouthful.

Medical Sep 28, 2007

Medical/pharmaceutical as usual (this one's a mixture of the two) and I checked 'other' as I don't think of it as scientific, though medicine is more like science than it used to be...

And I wouldn't want to be doing anything else, even though this job got me out of bed far too early this morning!
