En un d�a especialmente caluroso, a�n para ser comienzos de verano, nos reunimos en casa de Claudia Iglesias para ver qu� resultaba de esta idea inquietante y llena de preguntas en el aire, de tender un puente desde el territorio virtual al real. <br /><br>
Un aspecto que a�ad�a suspenso al asunto era el hecho de que, de entre los asistentes, s�lo una minor�a participa activamente en Proz. Algunos eran invitados que poco o nada conoc�an del sitio y que deseaban acercarse y conocer, de primera mano, de qu� se trata esta comunidad virtual. Claudia tambi�n invit� a Scott, moderador de la lista El Quijote, un excelente medio electr�nico de intercambio para los amantes del castellano. As� es que este encuentro fue a la vez una manera de dotar de carne y hueso a los alias o �nicknames� de Proz y, al mismo tiempo, crear un espacio para conocernos entre colegas, m�s all� de la circunstancia de origen. En Chile no faltan traductores, pero un aspecto que a muchos nos sorprende es la escasez de espacios de conocimiento e intercambio mutuo en donde se puedan abordar problemas que nos son comunes, un ambiente informal y relajado en donde compartir nuestras preocupaciones, complicidades, divergencias y diversidades, m�s all� de las diferencias de edad o de experiencia o, m�s precisamente, dejando que ellas potencien y alimenten la comunicaci�n.
Claudia y Kerry ten�an preparada una larga mesa con ensaladas y cubiertos y, mientras nos tom�bamos una �bebida� (como se dice en Chile a las gaseosas o refrescos) o el infaltable Pisco Sour, atr�s en el patio Patricio Ascui y Patricio San Mart�n, los dos �Patos�, iban armando el asado. Cuando comenzamos a comer, ya el ambiente era el que se siente al estar entre buenos amigos. Hablamos de montones de temas, saltando de uno a otro, y entremedio nos �bamos presentando y contando nuestras experiencias e intereses. Y as� como no falt� el bueno vino (muy apreciado por m� y por Henry Hinds, que ven�a directamente de El Paso, Texas) tampoco se hizo esperar el debate, por ejemplo en torno al grado de creatividad que hay en el traducir o las tarifas que un traductor debiera cobrar en Chile y en el extranjero. Un aspecto en el que hubo consenso es que, para que Proz no se convierta en un sitio que haga caer el precio y la calidad de las traducciones en una suerte de �subasta a la inversa�, es conveniente y deseable que se eliminen las �ofertas abiertas� (open bidding).
En total, fuimos 11 comensales que estuvimos reunidos por casi 5 horas y, a�n as�, una buena cantidad de temas quedaron pendientes... La mejor prueba de que el Powwow cumpli� plenamente su cometido es la propuesta, a la que todos asentimos de inmediato, de reunirnos otra vez en enero y, posiblemente, que este espacio sea mensual y se abra a todos quienes se deseen integrar. <br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
De este modo, el llamado mundo virtual, lejos de aislarnos o fragmentar a�n m�s nuestra red social, como algunos auguran, ha probado a trav�s de comunidades como Proz que tambi�n es capaz de crear y fortalecer lazos directos y reales entre las personas. Como me dijo Patricio al salir: �Qu� linda gente, �eh?�.
No quiero terminar sin agradecer en nombre de todos la excelente disponibilidad de Claudia al preocuparse de organizar esta reuni�n con varias semanas de anticipaci�n y al ofrecernos su lugar, su simpat�a y su calidez como persona. �Un mill�n de gracias, Claudia! :-)

On an uncharacteristically hot day, even for the beginning of summer, we gathered at Claudia Iglesias� house to see what would come out of this curious idea of building a bridge between the virtual territory and the real one.
An issue adding to the suspense was the fact that among the attendees, only a minority actively participated in Proz. Some participants were guests who knew little to nothing about the site but wanted to make contact and discover first hand what this virtual community is all about. Claudia also invited Scott, moderator for the El Quijote list, an excellent electronic media providing interchange among Spanish language lovers. This meeting provided a way to put faces to the Proz aliases or nicknames and at the same time, created a space in which to meet among colleagues beyond the mere circumstances originated by the first initial contact. There is no shortage of translators in Chile, but many of us are surprised by the lack of an environment for the mutual exchange of knowledge, where common problems and issues can be addressed in a casual and relaxed atmosphere conducive to sharing our concerns, complicities, divergences and diversities that go beyond age differences or experiences. Better yet, these very differences fuel and generate communication.
Claudia had a large table with all sorts of salads to accompany the ongoing barbecue while we drank sodas or the ever-present Pisco Sour (cousin of Tequila and lemon juice). By the time we started to eat, the environment already felt like one shared among friends. We talked about a variety of issues, jumping from one topic to the next as we introduced ourselves and talked about our experiences and interests. Some good Chilean wine (very appreciated by me and Henry Hinds who had arrived straight from El Paso, Texas) helped open up the discussion. Some of the topics that sparked our conversation included the degree of creativity involved in translations in general as well as the fees that ought to be charged in Chile and abroad. There was a consensus among the group that in order for Proz to avoid becoming a site that causes translation prices and quality to drop in a sort of �reverse auction� situation, open bidding should be eliminated.
We were 11 partygoers together for almost 5 hours�and quite a few issues are still pending. The best proof of this Powwow�s success is that we all agreed to meet again in January and possibly make this a monthly activity open to anyone who wants to join us.
We discovered that the so-called virtual world is far from isolating or fragmenting us from our social network as some predict. In fact, communities like Proz have shown that it is capable of creating and strengthening direct and real bonds between people.
I don�t want to finish without thanking Claudia on behalf of everyone for organizing this meeting with several weeks of preparation, as well as offering her home, her kindness and her warmth. �Thanks a million, Claudia! :-)
