It depends... Aug 10, 2009

I wasn't sure which translation to consider as my first. The first translation I ever did was a literary one, as far as I remember, so that's what I voted. But that was at school. If it is a question of the first translation I did as a professional translator, I don't remember for sure what it was, but I think it may have been on the subject of humanitarian aid or similar.

No prizes for guessing ... Aug 10, 2009

Law

But reading what John says below, my first unpaid translation was also in Latin class. Can't remember the exact topic, but Latin was one subject I could sit and work at for hours (unlike Maths!)

Technical specifications for a mass spectrometer Aug 10, 2009

How would I forget? It was during a summer bilingual secretarial job while I was still a student, and the 1st time ever I heard about spectrometers (or anything on the technical side). But the boss was adamant I could and had to do it - so I did. Into English too, not my native language... Anyway, a sales engineer then went to Australia with my translation in his pocket - and sold a lot of spectrometers!

The first... Aug 10, 2009

I interpreted the question as meaning my first paid translation. It was very short and had to do with a series of conferences for eyeglass makers. Quite simple really. It was just a series of dates and schedules of the various sessions.

If I think about the first translation I ever did, it was probably some classical text in ninth grade Latin class.

I can't even remember Aug 10, 2009

... what I did a month or two ago... it all goes in one ear and out the other, so to speak.
In fact, this morning I got an email from a client asking how I was getting on with the revision of a scientific article they sent me a few weeks ago... which I realised I'd overlooked in the heat of the summer...
The say it's a sign of genius ...

Lit at university - then social sciences I think... Aug 10, 2009

I took it to mean the first time I did any translation - which in my case was in my first year at University when I was faced with medieval-modern French (generally literature) and more modern Portuguese translations (also lit based)....a challenge to say the least! In my final year at university I translated a lot of short stories from Portuguese to English.

My first paid translation project was back translation from Portuguese of some 30k words of materials for a clinical protocol for a new diabetes medication.
I still do work for this same client today.

Oddly, while I remember many of the translations on which I've worked, at this juncture, of course, I've done so many that it would be possible to remember them all, but I DO remember the first one.

One another note, however, I also do interpreting, and, I confess, I often do not remember what I've interpreted, even shortly after I work, whether it be a deposition, court case, or medical consultation.
Hearing one language, and speaking in the other, and vice-versa, requires so much concentration, that I do not retain the content afterwards...I am too focused on "being an interpreting machine" while working.

IT Aug 10, 2009

My very first paid translation was four Microsoft manuals (Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint), 80 pages each!

My second assignment, from a different client, was a 200-word letter. Pretty easy, compared to the first.

Like Catherine, Aug 10, 2009

my first translation was in school, in a class on translating poetry.
My first *paid* translation was a patent, and I've been working in technical ever since.
