Name dropping and building a reputation. That was some time ago. Now, it is all a matter of keeping up that name and reputation, and occasionally raising rates!

My previous flat was worn, dank and fairly miserable. Since moving to a much nicer, newer and generally more cheerful (admittedly more expensive) place I've found my daily productivity has increased quite significantly. A lesson in not underestimating the importance of a pleasant working environment.
I'd say the major aspect at the moment is increasing productivity. And atht is not only by means of CAT or the like, but mainly thanks to experience.

You forgot that one. Volume of work at full capacity; rates, while important, are secondary. It could come from the same number of customers with more work or work from more customers, or both. Efficiency is important too, but in such skills as typing as fast as one can think (yes, experience), rather than CAT tools.

I guess the single most important factor in increasing my income recently (and in general) has been finding new clients. Charging new clients higher rates has helped to increase the amount I earn per hour. Working more hours (due to having more clients and more projects) has been the most significant factor in increasing my monthly income.

The single biggest factor which has increased my income has been the addition of new clients. Yes, I am charging them slightly higher rates, but the volume has made more difference than anything else. I spend as much time as I can stand sending out my résumé to new agencies. I am also polite and responsive to new queries. I recently received an inquiry out of nowhere which resulted in my single biggest volume of work this year. I do not know which database they found me in, but hooray nonethel... See more The single biggest factor which has increased my income has been the addition of new clients. Like Jenn, I got new clients this year, and they continue to provide lots of volume. I was lucky--got them via word-of-mouth. Unlike Jenn, I didn't raise my rates, but steady volume makes up for it, and each job goes faster than the last because I have gotten to know the clients (one of them especially) so well.
