I had better skills in the past, thanks to my previous job, but I have a strange relationship with technology. So I just use what I need, and try to use it at my best.
But as soon as I finish my working day, well, I do not spend a minute at my computer, not even for fun (my friends on facebook hate me, my girlfriend hates me when we have to download pictures), and I do not spend time, even though I should, to learn new things, unless they are/become necessary for my work.

My knowledge seems to be fairly good, but it happens to me that when I try to do something outside my IT concrete capacities (updating and upsetting some functions on my dual-boot laptop equipped with Linux or on the other Macintosh-based laptop), I find myself thinking and reading instructions and trying and unloading and searching...
so... a little discouraged. But as far as my standard functionalities which should be used for job, everything is (more or less) working fine.

(I did work for a software company for a number of years), although I prefer not to become too dependent on all the complexities and finer features of the available technology in order not to expose my business to risk (and because I want to translate, not fiddle with CAT tools).

Since everything is automated nowadays, the user is not always involved in the backgroud dooings that we used to be invloved in.
With Windows 7, I cant figure out how to deinstall the stupid Microsoft Messenger, for example. In other versions, it was much easier

Which is not good, I still have many things to learn about translation programs, etc. I will take some time to improve this aspect of the profession this year and the next.

Which means infinitely better than some people's (viz my mother and most people in offices when I am in a hurry to get some info out of them) and infinitely worse than anyone who is at least two days younger than me.
That said, I like to think that I am still learning, and look forward to my sons teaching me some new tricks when they are old enough - if they can bear to do so.
Enjoying Windows 7 over previous versions btw.

When it comes to software, I am probably above average user of the programs I use a lot.
I prefer a Mac to a PC, so my ability with PC programs is probably lacking.
However, several of my friends write code, fix computers, are IT geeks, or design computer components. Compared with them, I'm the slow kid on the block.

Another strange question - what average means? Average in comparison with ProZ.com colleagues/colleagues in the office/PC user from the street/teacher in the school/my own kids? In comparison with the user from the street I might have some knowledge above average, but some of the colleagues here are much more experienced in the field of CAT tools.

I've worked at software companies for most of the past 15 years, so I'm constantly surrounded by needs to learn new techniques and to use software, scripts, macros or whatever to get tasks done. I even put these in my yearly objectives and employee development plan.
