I don't actually have a workspace. I have a laptop.

Are we talking Nov 19, 2010

about our workspace as in our table or the desktop on our computers?

If it is my table, then it is a bit disorganised but seeing as I file everything away, I have never lost anything.
If it is my desktop on my computer, that is very well stuctured without any rubbish lying around

Here, there and everywhere Nov 19, 2010

Like Mary, my work centre is my laptop (although right now I am happily installed in my office with a desktop in the absence of the others who use this workpost) - a bit of a case of wherever I lay my hat

Disadvantages: occasionally information gets left on another computer, intermittent access to paper dictionaries (mainly my beloved Alcaraz and Hughes)
Advantages: no one can accuse me of having an untidy desk.

I can't help it, I am a translator! Nov 19, 2010

So over 70% of us translators are not very tidy? It's clear: I can't help it, I am a translator!

It makes me feel less guilty. And it gives me something to say to my husband next time he makes a comment on my cluttered desk.

I agree with Els. However, an organized chaos is a form of tidiness, isn't it?
Both my deskop and the desk are a bit cluttered, but thus far I've never lost anything. And that's basically all that matters.

Have a great weekend.

Very cluttered Nov 19, 2010

But having just moved, I decided to buy an organiser box to put all the "temporary" papers that tend to stay on my desktop for months. I hope it will help a bit! But that won't remove the headphones, camera, watch, calculator, USB stick, keys, lipstick, water bottle, handkerchiefs, glasses, chocolate, handcream and the like...

Neat and tidy! Nov 19, 2010

But to say "immaculately" would be sort of an exaggeration...

Boarding school cured me of tidying up... Nov 19, 2010

Everything at my boarding school had to be tidied up regularly, and NOTHING could be left on the table, however neatly, over the lunch break or other short intervals. Otherwise it was confiscated!
Sewing, letter-writing, schoolwork... Everything had to be packed away as soon as you stopped doing it. Consequently, many activities were never even started. It was not worth it in the time available.

After seven years of that, I was cured.
Library training taught me to arrange things more or less logically. I loved patterns and systems as a child, and the Universal Decimal Classification appealed in an odd way. Everything could in theory be pigeonholed.
I was never good at it...

Learning to use a computer and the ´Explore´ function in Word broke all that down. The less the yellow folder is fragmented, the faster Word can find a term in my Terminology Scrap box, where I save all the good ideas I collect in my translating career.

Trados TMs are the same - with everything in the same one, the Concordance will find it. I'm learning to use AutoSuggest in Studio 2009 - and whoopee, that only works with a LARGE TM!

Some terms get rationalised into Multiterm, but again, one database per language pair.

There are three categories in my workspace:
Current, archived and in the bin.
(= On the desk, on the shelves or in the bin.)

It looks chaotic, but I can always find what I want.

I usually find what I'm looking for Nov 19, 2010

Admittedly, my desk is a bit of a mess but I usually find what I'm looking for. I try to tidy up regularly but tidiness only seems to last a couple of days. Actually, I do find it quite cosy the way it is - and I've got everything I need (or don't need) close at hand - waterbottle, calculator, tissues, calender, lip balm, tons of hand cream, a broken torch, ...

Unfortunately it's quite a small desk.

Messy but I know... Nov 19, 2010

... and anyway, I recently read somewhere that the untidier your desk/work station is, the more intelligent you are, so yah boo sucks to all the tidies.

On another tack, I'm disappointed to find it's too late to add to yesterday's post, as I just received an email from a client who asked me for a translation estimate yesterday, telling me "don't start just yet, we'll probably translate it ourselves and send it to you for revision". They are academics so the text will most likely be understandable, unlike the ones I was ranting about in the previous poll, but it just goes to show...

Messy as ever Nov 19, 2010

My desk is messy as ever. Perhaps, because I think of my translation which is staring at my face, making me tense at times.
