Voice-recognition software can be useful when it is a straight-forward text with not too many unfamiliar words (to the software of course). I don't use it for texts with lots of names, acronyms, etc., it takes simply too long for me to spell them all out to the software. Nevertheless, it can be useful in some instances. And of course your health profits when you can move around a bit and rest your writsts.

Hi,
I'm just testing Dragon Naturally Speaking Premium v.11 (German/English) and I'm rather impressed.
I can speak fast and clearly and the sentence will complete in no time, also when using unusual words (which can be trained anyway).
In rare occasions, words will be written in german as 2 capitalized words (Mehrfach Anwendungen) and I would like just to give the command "einziges Wort, groß", or giving a command like "confirm" to confirm the segment in a CAT t... See more Hi,
I'm just testing Dragon Naturally Speaking Premium v.11 (German/English) and I'm rather impressed.
I can speak fast and clearly and the sentence will complete in no time, also when using unusual words (which can be trained anyway).
In rare occasions, words will be written in german as 2 capitalized words (Mehrfach Anwendungen) and I would like just to give the command "einziges Wort, groß", or giving a command like "confirm" to confirm the segment in a CAT tool. But this luxury means: you must pay 300 Euro more to get the Professional version of Dragon in which you can write your own command scripts.
I recommend to use a computer with a modern, fast processor (e.g. INTEL x2 Core 2.53 GH) and at least 2GB RAM (4GB, the today's standard is much better).
I have tested it in MemoQ, but I will give it a try in Trados Studio and DVX.
The big question is: Is it faster than a fast typist by considering the corrections you must do? Until I'm not really trained with Dragon, I cannot tell, but I'm impressed about the possibility of COMBINING the typing and the dictating.

After about 10 hours, the programme is as tired as I am, though, and has to be restarted.

My experience exactly. Actually, I've noticed that DNS becomes less efficient and has to be restarted if I tell it to "Stop listening" too many times. Perhaps it's easily offended?
It's also a bit stubborn, in that, no matter how many times I train it, it often won't recognise the difference between "in" and "and". That adds a bit of extra proofreading time, but I'm still extremely happy with it and, at this point, wouldn't do without it.
Ok, back to work..."Listen to me".

... because I get a lot of pain in my right hand, wrist and thumb. But then I realised the problem is the mouse, not the keyboard, so presumably it wouldn't help much with that, right?

My friend swears by Red Dragon but he uses it because he has problems with wrist discomfort from typing too much.
Although I don't need it (yet), I would be interested in acquiring a system that did not require an extended "training" period to get it to recognise your voice, but there appear to be none available, and I always seem to have something else more pressing to do instead.
One of my reasons for not using Trados is the time needed to learn how to use it...

To make Dragon combine two words into one, the command in English is "Combine that".
I use Alt F12 in Wordfast to insert a string of text that is unchanged in translation and acronyms or proper names can be inserted as placeables. Generally, combining Dragon with some use of keyboard and mouse works really well for me. Words that are consistenty mis-recognised can be deleted in the words list and then reinstated and trained.

my arm packed up about 25 years ago, to begin with I had a secretary direct, then one who typed my recordings and now i dictate into a philips dictation device and get DNS to transcribe it afterwards - unknown words/names go in as "asterisk" and a good double proofread tends to do the job. Couldn't work/live without it!!
PS training time was minimum
PPS after ten hours it gets tired?? I make sure I get my stuff done within 8, of which only about 4 are actual dictation, ... I googled Free voice Recognition software (more in hope than expectation!) and found out about this.
Go to start - control Panel - Ease of access - Speech Recognition. Clicking on the words Speech Recognition offers you options, including the Tutorial, which is useful if, like me, you have never used Speech Recognition before!

I find it useful for making notes prior to writing reposts for my teaching job. There is a useful tutorial and a voice recognition training option. This has made a difference to accuracy. It gives my hands a rest, too, which is nice. I bought a cheap headset mouse, as it picks up my voice better than the laptop mouse. You do need to work in a quiet room, as it doesn't cope with background noise - TV, washing machine etc!
I am also trialling Dragon Naturally Speaking for pupils I work with, but I don't have that on my own computer or laptop.
If you are interested in trying Voice Recognition, the free software is a good place to start. ▲ Collapse

thanks for the tips!
Fortunately there are a lot of text/word manipulation commands available with the software which I still need to get familiar with (in 2 languages!) and I also found out that you can control the keyboard.
In the technical forums / speech recognition) I've found a post about AutoHotKey which is very useful, even without voice-over.
