I currently have 4 computers in all: one PC less than a year old, which I got when my other one was slowing down and causing problems after a few years of good working life. I had the old one reconditioned too, so now it's even faster than the main one. I use it as a backup workstation in case of issues cropping up with the newer one, or if I simply want to change where I'm working (due to temperature at different times of the year or day, view from windows, SW versions I want to use, etc. Fri... I use it as a backup workstation in case of issues cropping up with the newer one, or if I simply want to change where I'm working (due to temperature at different times of the year or day, view from windows, SW versions I want to use, etc. Friends, family or colleagues can use it too since it's in the spare room I have for visitors. My Spanish partner uses it sometimes, but prefers her Mac for most things (she also had an XP Virtual Environment installed on the Mac for compatibility).
I also recently bought a new laptop with W7 and MS Office 2010 and... the least said about that the better! I had to get a Virtual XP Machine installed on it to be able to keep working with my favourite CD dictionaries, which are not available for W7 and older SW versions. Now it's 3 weeks later and I'm still struggling with how to access my WORK folder from both environments (W7 and XP) but I hope to get round to that this week some time, workload permitting.
My older laptop is now more or less fully dedicated to its current task as an internet TV decoder, linked up to my flat screen TV so I can watch the BBC and others.

an old laptop (needing replacement) which I have for 5 years, a new PC (less than one year old) in Lisbon and another PC in Brussels (about 3 years old)...

I have a new PC with W7 and hope to refurbish the one that ran XP to use as a backup. I submitted a question for this forum asking about colleagues' reaction to W7. I hope the moderators post it, because I'd like to hear how others are managing - but that's another issue. I'm encouraged to learn about the possibility of a virtual XP machine - I will follow up on that, because W7 has deprived me of a long list of functions that I depended on.

thinking about it now. Have to start thinking about buying a new one in February.
Have one Win7 main computer with 1TB hard disc, 8GB RAM and two high res graphic cards, one XP laptop for a certain customer, one Vista laptop (18") as backup and my 17" MacPro laptop which I cant use much because of all the incompatibilities with everything (unfortunately as it is amazingly fast)

MacBook Pro is 3-4 years old, the Dell is 2.
I have a friend who works on Macs, he keeps it updated, and says it will need more memory and an upgrade in January, but there is no need for a new machine. Getting a machine that could be easily upgraded was a plus with the Mac.
The Dell is another story.

My laptop is about 9 months old, my desktop about 13 months. Both have W7 and XP so that I can still use most of the functions, including my dictionary CDs.
My "dinosaur", a desktop is almost 7 years old...and acting accordingly.
As Neil indicated, new is, by all means, not a synomym for better.

Installing a Virtual machine for an XP environment shouldn't be a problem in a new PC, so unless you use it for gaming or have programs and stuff like movies that fills up your disk space, there should be plenty of room. It is apparently quite painstaking and time-consuming - I paid my tech guy 35 euros to install it and I managed to load up my Oxford Superlex and Routledges etc no problem (I know there are online resources but I'm fond of the old Superlex 3-in-one (English to French, German and Spanish) and you never know when you'll be stuck with no internet access).
I have also installed WF classic in both environments and they seem to work OK so far.
As for W7, it may look nice and be more stable (yadda yadda ho hum) but from my point of view it is really irritating the way they've changed all the commands and interface. I know I'll get used to it eventually but resent the inconvenience of this imposed learning curve.

My husband is a computer geek so he is constantly taking my computer apart and putting new thingamabobs on it, so some parts are several years old and some are just a few months old.
I'm really grateful that my husband knows about this stuff as I am completely computer challenged. All he hears from me is "I need it to work NOW. Can't you just make it WORK?"

I have one desktop, W7, Intel core 2 duo, thats more than four years old, one lenovo G series laptop with Core 2 duo - more than 2 years old. And one office desktop, AMD Quad core processor, 1 TB hard disk, 22inch Dell screen, an year old.
