Pros and cons of being self-employed Mar 9, 2013

1 or 2 weeks full-on vacation, for sure - any more and I'd be anxious (whether or not the anxiety is justified) about my customers going elsewhere and staying there.
But I can take a day here or there at my entire discretion - and frequently do.
And as a plus for the nature of our profession, we can travel somewhere for a shorter or longer period of time and work from there more or less as well as if we were at home. I do that too.

I have to take off some times because I do not have work all the time...sometimes a week, sometimes few days, but maybe even a month or more!!! Sometimes I have so much work that I work in week end too even months, and from dusk to dawn...my heart already is affected by such program.

I haven't taken a "real" vacation (meaning more than a few days) since my youngest daughter left home = some 13 years ago. Often, I take a few days off here and there between jobs, but no decent break for a long time...

Gotta have it... Mar 9, 2013

I wouldn't be happy without my fortnight in Greece every year - gives me something to look forward to!
Other than that, I often manage a few days in Wales and/or the odd visit to Germany to visit family (my daughter lives in Berlin).

Ideally, I would work 6-7 days per week for the rest of the year and take all of July and August off. Anyone familiar with the weather in Cyprus would know how hard it is to work in those two months here. However, with work levels having plummeted due to the crisis in the past few years, I have not been able to work flat out for the rest of the year so have had to take whatever comes along during the hot months as well. This year, however, I have been working flat out for most of the time, so, if this continues, perhaps I will be able to afford the luxury of a summer break this year.Collapse

I did not become a freelancer to have more time for myself, but to be independent and to do as I please...

at least 4 weeks Mar 9, 2013

I try to take off at least 4 weeks per year.
Last year I managed to take off 5 weeks plus a couple of days now and then to work on my house or participate in kindergarden when they invite parents. Let's see what this year brings...

If "OFF" means no computer, not even for emails well 1 week then.
I usually have vacation twice a year. Once I visit my mother for 2 weeks, but I work, maybe not as much as I do at home, but still, it is not time off.
1 week is for traveling abroad, and then I am definitely OFF.

As some one already mentioned, my work flow isn't constant. Normally I have a couple projects a week, but the rest of the time "I'm on vacation." It seems that every time I start to feel like a bum, some one calls me with a big project. I usually end up working night and day to get it done, it happened Wednesday night ^_^ I'm really not sure exactly how much down time I've had.

I have March 17-24 off from school, but I'm already looking for another large project to fill in that gap

Interesting voting Mar 9, 2013

After very nearly 1000 votes, all the categories are pretty much even. It appears that anywhere between zero and 30 days has to be considered normal.

Personally, I tend to organise my private life around my work; and my work around my private life. What is life if not a series of compromises?

That was last year. Two out-of-town holidays.

I do always take some work with me though...

Difficult one that.
I do go on holiday, but always take my work with me, I just work a little less when I am there ...
