I am not sure to be perfectly honest. But if a novice asked me any sort of question, then I am sure that I would be of assistance, but just to give someone advice without being asked? | | | Thayenga Alemanha Local time: 08:32 Membro (2009) inglês para alemão + ... Actually: others | Mar 20, 2013 |

I try to give balanced answers to anything she asks me, and the innocence in her questions about things I take for granted is surprisingly refreshing. I tell her that my answers are merely "my own version" - they are not the be all and end all of everything. I also recommend that she asks other "seasoned" translators and see how they respond. I welcome being asked - it's quite flattering, actually. But as Michael says, you have to initiate the process, grasshopper. ▲ Collapse

A number of years ago, when I was working in-house, I mentored some of my younger colleagues. Though it is true that passing along knowledge from one generation to the next is a very rewarding experience it makes one feel old nonetheless… | | | Nicole Schnell Estados Unidos Local time: 23:32 inglês para alemão + ... I will be happy to share all those things that I have been taught at New York University. I have also mailed entire packages of parallel texts to newbies on their request. Please note that I have never received as much as a simple Thank You. What I will not share, is: - Business Matters. I can tell a newbie how to do the necessary homework, though. However, how to run a business in your particular city, county, country, nation or continent - sorry, I can not know. Plea... Shouldn't universities be doing this kind of thing? Failing that, you can post questions here and you can pick your answer. I was just wondering who has time to do this sort of thing? Maybe translators who are nearing retirement would have... We all tend to share tax information, because it is a bit difficult to understand fully what you are supposed to do. And the tax authorities can give out conflicting information. | | | Nicole Schnell Estados Unidos Local time: 23:32 inglês para alemão + ... In memoriam True, Tatty. | Mar 20, 2013 |
Tatty wrote: Shouldn't universities be doing this kind of thing? They don't - which is OK, though. Who wants to be taught business issues by instructors who haven't been in touch with the real world in years because they were too busy teaching? Failing that, you can post questions here and you can pick your answer. Exactly. Just don't ask me to summarize all my knowhow based on the required 5 years in marketing at the university and the following 25 years of experience in one or two comfy emails, like cooking instructions for a gourmet meal. It doesn't work like that. It's actually a bit insulting. I think that it is a relatively standard practice for agencies to send new translators translations similar to the one assigned done by other translators. I think the leanest and most efficient way to improve quality and industry practices is to train the PMs. Regarding newly hired PMs, one of my largest and oldest agency clients specifically asks me to "break them in". Edited for typos, sorry!

We complained in class when we had a 2 week deadline for a 200 word assignment... I would teach them that reality is somewhat different than was we get taught.

I haven't voted because I can't make any sense of it really. How can I choose just one category? If I think I can help someone, I help them. If the question was round the other way, I would have said I DON'T offer help on DTP matters, computing techniques (anything to do with packages, add-ons, plug-ins, work-arounds, downloads or those other terms people bandy around), tax... Some of my answers would seem really cruel. Dealing with agencies sometimes can turn to real battle. As for the taxation is the same. But any of us cannot avoid that. You have to learn in advance what you shall do. This is a part of this profession. I think the clear and accurate work in itself nowadays is not enough for the success.
