What is this thing you speak of? The concept of "normal" business hours flew out of the window from day 1 as a translator. However, that's my choice, and I can work my schedule around my free time - whatever that is/was.

I am available seven days a week, with a bit of time out for shopping and other necessities, but only during normal working hours - i.e. no evening or night work.

I generally keep to Spanish working hours as far as availability is concerned, although I do work outside those hours. Not too wise on my part as most of my customers are in Germany ...

My sentiments exactly - there is basically time when I am working, and time when I am not working, and those times are in no way standardised. I also prefer it that way - sometimes I don't like working in the morning, on other days I like taking the evening off instead. Sometimes neither or both are options... too much variability to generalise (in a very good way).
Normal business hours? | Mar 27, 2013 |
There is nothing strict about my working hours. The whole point of being a freelancer, at least for me, is to be your own boss, to be free from a strict schedule and routine and to be able to structure one's time. When work comes my way (and I accept it), I just do it, regardless of working hours!
Life balance | Mar 27, 2013 |
Fairly strictly, with the odd Saturday/WE working because of poor time management. I don't want customers to think I'm always available, and they don't expect me to. For emergencies, I charge 50% more for work to be done specifically at nights or WEs. Philippe

But I am definately not available 24/7, I do have children and .... freinds My hours do get out of hand occassionally, but I have cut that down a bit since this year.

I try to work as much as possible during school hours, because it's extremely difficult to work with children around. However, I often find myself trying to squeeze a bit more time in here and there so that I don't miss deadlines.

I receive emails 24/7 but only reply Monday to Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM. Unless the client is in the US These strict business hours are vital. They keep me sane. Miriam www.ueberleben-als-uebersetzer.de

business hours mean nothing when you work with California or with Singapore! It doesn't mean I'll 100% adapt my working hours to the client's ones. However I charge 40% more for work to be done specifically at nights or WEs. I am in Paris, Madeleine

Being a freelancer means you can work any time you want, I try to be available when my client are at work, cause they could work and need something urgent, but if I want to go to the gym at 3 pm, I will, and the choice depends only on the workload.
It depends... | Mar 27, 2013 |
I am also going to school full time and have a shopoholic wife, so sometimes I have to break away from the computer, though not always by choice. I always tell myself that I'll take a break after each project, but as soon as the next job offer comes in, I jump on it. I'm a glutton for punishment.
