I'm very concerned about the general state and evolution of the world: the immense environmental issues, but also the increasingly threatening anti-democratic, fascist and racist forces (US, China, North Korea, Russia, Turkey, Belarus, Hungary...), the increasing threat of war etcetera. The longer it takes, the more I feel like a sitting duck: vulnerable and not seeing how this could be stopped without total escalation and subsequent destruction like WWII.

AI is an environmental threat, but it is actually humanity itself that is a threat to itself.

Yesterday, I read an article stating that the blackout that left Portugal, Spain and parts of France in the dark for more than 10 hours last April was mainly due to the overload of AI data centres. The irony is that most data centres were designed with generator-based backup systems and therefore continue to function when the rest of the world stops working. For years, I have heard protests from many environmentalists, and others, about the environmental impact of paper production, but curiously... Try to talk some sense into your crooked to the bone chief gynecologist, your rabid chihuahua with her pathological hate, your micro napoleon and your not so pretty blondie who said "let's sign nothing, let's just fight" back in 2022.
In the meantime, your taxes will be spent on their feeding frenzy and job security. | | |

1) Who are you talking about? I don't like guessing.
2) What might that "sense" be according to you? | | | | IrinaN (X) Verenigde State Local time: 21:47 uit Engels in Russies + ... | This is not a site for political discussions | Oct 12, 2025 |
I didn't initiate it. It will all be deleted in no time. Over and out. | | | | Lieven Malaise België Local time: 04:47 Member (2020) uit Frans in Nederlands + ...

Why responding then in the first place? I learnt nothing and so did nobody else. | | | | IrinaN (X) Verenigde State Local time: 21:47 uit Engels in Russies + ... | No one has to learn anything from me | Oct 12, 2025 |
Results of WWII and War and Peace are the clues.
No one learnt anything… that’s the problem.
Double over and out. | | |

True, but as Lieven points out, the question is itself political. Any reduction of AI's energy use will be the result of economics and/or political action.

Right! The reasoning is (sort of) clear: in War and Peace, Russia beats back a foreign invader (i.e. don't invade Russia!). The country (as the USSR) won WWII, took a whole lot of territory and then lost pretty well all of it plus fifteen republics, which was more than it had won (i.e. Russia would do well not to invade other countries!). The reasoning is clear and I think we can all agree with it. But Lieven's point remains valid too: "AI is an environmental threat, but it is actually humanity itself that is a threat to itself".
Having said this, AI may itself help us find solutions to the energy crisis it is itself creating. It will certainly help design and build better solar panels and wind turbines, and it may also help achieve commercial nuclear fusion. | | | | | Post removed: This post was hidden by a moderator or staff member for the following reason: Empty post. | Gerard Barry Duitsland Local time: 04:47 uit Duits in Engels
No, I'm not concerned at all about AI's energy use. I'm much more concerned about its impact on jobs. | | | | Gerard Barry Duitsland Local time: 04:47 uit Duits in Engels

Worried about AI's impact on jobs or its impact in terms of energy use? Or both? | | | | | Multiple reasons | Oct 13, 2025 |

There are multiple reasons to be concerned about the development of AI.
“The A.I. pioneer Yoshua Bengio, a computer science professor at the Université de Montréal, is the most-cited researcher alive, in any discipline. When I spoke with him in 2024, Dr. Bengio told me that he had trouble sleeping while thinking of the future. Specifically, he was worried that an A.I. would engineer a lethal pathogen — some sort of super-coronavirus — to eliminate humanity. “I don’t think there’s anything close in terms of the scale of danger,” he said.”
“Dr. Bengio’s pathogen is no longer a hypothetical. In September, scientists at Stanford reported they had used A.I. to design a virus for the first time. Their noble goal was to use the artificial virus to target E. coli infections, but it is easy to imagine this technology being used for other purposes.
I’ve heard many arguments about what A.I. may or may not be able to do, but the data has outpaced the debate, and it shows the following facts clearly: A.I. is highly capable. Its capabilities are accelerating. And the risks those capabilities present are real. Biological life on this planet is, in fact, vulnerable to these systems. On this threat, even OpenAI seems to agree.
In this sense, we have passed the threshold that nuclear fission passed in 1939. The point of disagreement is no longer whether A.I. could wipe us out. It could. Give it a pathogen research lab, the wrong safety guidelines and enough intelligence, and it definitely could. A destructive A.I., like a nuclear bomb, is now a concrete possibility. The question is whether anyone will be reckless enough to build one.”
