That's what I have been doing since 2006... | | | | Helena Chavarria Spanje Local time: 08:43 Member (2011) uit Spaans in Engels + ... | Not possible in Spain | Oct 20, 2025 |
I live in Spain and, as far as I know, when self-employed people reach retirement age, they're not allowed to get their full pension and carry on working full time.
If they carry on working for a year after retirement age, which is currently 67, then they're entitled to receive 50% of their pension (about €500/month) and can continue to work.
Yes, as long as my brain keeps working, I’ll keep translating.

No — I’ve moved on to other interests, financed entirely by pension income earned in Europe way back in the 20th Century. | | | | Thayenga Duitsland Local time: 08:43 Member (2009) uit Engels in Duits + ... | Retirement and Work | Oct 20, 2025 |
I've retired, well, a few years ago , but am still working. The only difference is that I am now a little more selective.

I am working, declaring and la seguridat social is informed.

receive 50% of their pension
Something like that happenes also in Slovenia. I am not sure by how much but it is limited too. My mom didn't agree to it and went in full pension, after 40 years of work. | | | | Angie Garbarino Local time: 08:43 Member (2003) uit Engels in Italiaans + ... | Like I wrote | Oct 20, 2025 |

Law in Spain changed about 5 years ago, so not anymore. | | | | | Doing it now | Oct 20, 2025 |
I’m now about 75% retired, but only because there’s very little work for me any more.
I might carry on indefinitely with a few jobs if they keep coming, but there is much more to life than translating.

I can only dream of my retirement right now and I absolutely still love my job, but I think I would quit altogether. I would need more than 1 lifetime to do everything I would like to do (hiking, traveling, cinema, cultural discovery ...).

A couple of months ago, I received a letter from the Seguridad Social and it's as I mentioned. Self-employed people aren't entitled to 'flexible retirement'.
...the amount of the pension in active retirement has been modified, which now depends on the period elapsed between reaching the ordinary legal retirement age and the date on which the retirement pension is accessed in its active modality, according to the following scale:
with 1 year of delay, 45% of the pension will be collected;
with 2 years of delay, 55% of the pension;
with 3 years of delay, 65% of the pension;
with 4 years of delay, 80% of the pension; and
From the 5th year of delay, 100% of the pension will be collected. | | | | Angie Garbarino Local time: 08:43 Member (2003) uit Engels in Italiaans + ... | Not under certains circumstances, I am 69 | Oct 21, 2025 |

In English
The retirement pension will be compatible with self-employment (self-employment) whose total annual income does not exceed the minimum interprofessional wage (€12,960). Those who perform these activities will not be required to pay social security contributions.

I will reach the retirement age soon and was planing to cut back a bit and do some other things. Unfortunately, Corona and AI have already done the cutting back so I guess I will retire but not really that comfortably. I will remain available for translation and MTPE work on request but I will not actively seek new clients anymore. | | | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: If you could retire comfortably, would you still translate or interpret? | Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
