Highly unlikely

I have seen similar symptoms, when one of the memory chips failed.
It is highly unlikely to be a memory chip failure, as long as her OS is booting normally. However, it is not impoossible (this to be the cause). There are some good memory testing programs on the market. One is called MemoryTest (version 3.0 already). This one makes a bootable diskette, and when booting on floppy is thoroughfully testing your system's memory. Should any problem be in your memory chips, this program will detect it.
