Hi. I\'m just getting into Pagemaker (version 6.5) and have not been able to load and edit a .pdf file. It says that .pdf format is not supported. What gives?

Use Acrobat Reader for *.pdf Mar 15, 2003

PDF-files are not Pagemaker files.

Although Pagemaker should be able to create a PDF file, it is not indetended to read them.

You can download a free reader from http://www.adobe.com

There is a full version of Acrobat, which allows you to create your own PDF-files, but this is not free of charge.

Thanks Jerzy. Are there Adobe compatible .pdf editors out there that are cheap? Also, if PageMaker does not edit .pdf files what is its main usefulness?

Thanks from a newbie.

Hi there,

PageMaker is not a PDF editor. As many other programs (such as CorelDraw), it allows you to read and to create PDF documents, but not to edit them. PageMaker is a wonderful program, but it is mostly oriented towards print publishing, and it\'s great to handle long documents (such as books) and publications (magazines, brochures, and so on).

The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free software that you can download from Adobe\'s site and many others, but it only allows you to read the files. You need Adobe Acrobat to edit them (and it is quite expensive). I do not know of shareware or freeware to edit PDF files, though there are some other programs, Jawspdf for instance, that are perhaps a little cheaper.

You may find a lot of info and other programs too in www.planetpdf.com

Good luck

Pagemaker 6.5 Mar 17, 2003

It is possible to copy graphics and text from a .PDF file and insert what you have copied in e.g. a Pagemaker file. Read the Help file in the Acrobat Reader and you\'ll find a description how to do it.

different programs, different formats, different uses Mar 17, 2003

Hi, Edward.

- PDF is a format designed for final delivery, not for editing. It is based on the PostScript language and is pretty much like an \"electronic printout\" of a document.

Hi, Edward.

- PDF is a format designed for final delivery, not for editing. It is based on the PostScript language and is pretty much like an \"electronic printout\" of a document.

- PDF files can be created from virtually any application, via Acrobat Distiller, PDFWriter or other PDF writing utilities.

- Acrobat Reader (free from http://www.adobe.com) allows you to open, read and print PDF files (as long as they are not protected)

- Adobe Acrobat (latest version is 5.0) allows you to save a PDF document as .rtf, but with some limitations; depending on what application was used to generate the PDF file and with what settings, the rtf file might have carriage returns at the end of every line. Some plug-ins are available (such as Iceni Gemini, http://www.iceni.com) that can convert to rtf and get rid of extra carriage returns. Any conversion from PDF to other formats however will never restore the original formatted document, in whatever original application had been used.

- Adobe Acrobat also has a Text Touchup tool that lets you edit the text in the PDF, but always on a line-by-line basis with no automatic text flow. It allows you to edit or delete a line, but not to add any lines of text. It is usuful to change a few words in the file, or for tables. Also, bear in mind that this kind of text editing is only possible if the fonts used in the PDF are available on your system or if they had been embedded in the PDF (not subsetted, but dully embedded).

- Some PostScript-based graphics programs, like Adobe Illustrator, can actually open a PDF file and let you edit its contents, both text and graphics, but again with the line-by-line restriction on existing text flow.

- PageMaker is a page-layout program, not a PDF editor.

From the translator\'s point of view, receiving a file in PDF is not much different from receiving a fax or a printout. It is always worth asking the client for the original document, although this may well be a QuarkXPress, InDesign or other format not immediately available to the translator...

HtH,

Roberta

Roberta, Elenora, Niels, Jerzy,

Thanks to all of you! I have learned a lot about the Adobe products from your simple, concise explanations. I liked the comment likening .pdf files to faxes. Take care.

Edward
