Office becomes Microsoft 365

Microsoft's Office package was first released in 1989, and next to Windows, Office is probably the company's best-known brand. Now Microsoft has decided to no longer offer the individual apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook together as MS Office, but as "Microsoft 365". However, the mentioned apps will not change, they will only be bundled under Microsoft 365 in the future after Microsoft's renaming: Office becomes Microsoft 365.

Rather, Office 365 becomes Microsoft 365. (More specifically, for us, "Microsoft 365 Family", in contrast to "Microsoft 365 Personal" which allows only one user per license.)

The suite that is currently known as Microsoft 365 has been known as Office 365 for about 5 years now. For people who did not want to pay a subscription fee, there was and is the possibility to buy just Word, Excel and Powerpoint in a non-subscription way (the current version is called "Office Home & Student 2021"). Microsoft has been changing the names of its products and suites every year or so for the past 5 years.

For as long as I remember, Word and Excel have always been part of an "office" product that sometimes also included Publisher and/or Access and/or Outlook, depending on the version that you bought/got. However, you're right: it is actually possible to buy Word or Excel on its own (even today), but the price for e.g. just Word is the same as the price for Word plus Excel plus PowerPoint.

According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_365#As_Microsoft_365, 'On March 30, 2020, Microsoft announced that the consumer plans of Office 365 would be rebranded as "Microsoft 365"'. It's a subscription service.

Where did you read that individual app licences can no longer be bought? It's always a good idea to quote one's source for such information.

They still call the one-time purchase version 'Office' here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/buy/compare-all-microsoft-365-products?&activetab=tab:primaryr1

They presumably have a big product-renaming department that needs to be kept busy.

Microsoft wants to promote its SAAS products which are much more expensive, so they have to find gullible people.
By the way, there are now a lot of license free softwares which are now fully compatible.I ve stopped buying Office products several years ago.

Isn't it a bit rude to call your colleagues gullible just because they make another software choice than you?

That so-called Office-compatible software isn't always compatible. I prefer the real thing with support, which is one of the things you get with the subscription.

If you use CAT tools like Wordbee, Matecat, and alike, you can work with other licence-free software, other than Microsoft software.
