Dear Translator / Interpreter,

We would like to inform you about the foundation of the Hellenic Association of Τranslators and Interpreters (HATI) in the UK.

Our professional experience as translators/interpreters as well as translation educators has shown us the need to establish rules and recommendations for our field.

Thus, we decided to establish HATI aiming at creating a representative body of practic-ing translators and interpreters working with Greek as their Source and/or Target lan-guage. Our objective is to promote and maintain high standards of professional transla-tion and interpreting as well as safeguard the interests of practitioners and their clients. Moreover, we hope to provide opportunities for practitioners to get together, correspond, exchange ideas, develop their skills and knowledge, and generally to help in the acquisi-tion and dissemination of knowledge relating to their profession.

Recognising the increasing importance of the translational activity in the age of informa-tion, we believe that HATI can contribute not only in the improvement of transla-tion/interpreting services but also to the exchange of cultural experiences, especially be-tween the English and Greek speaking worlds, promoting Greek and Cypriot cultural output in the UK and the Anglophone one in Greece and Cyprus.

To further the objectives of our Association, we intend to undertake any relevant lawful ac-tivity and especially to organise meetings, lectures, seminars, workshops etc., to form standardisation committees, to publish printed material, and to arrange for professional examinations for new translators/interpreters, to establish relations with other similar bodies, etc.

Needless to say that an essential condition for achieving our goals is the participation of all those interested in HATI and its activities. Thus, we established various classes of membership so as to include not only the professional translators/interpreters (either as Fellows or as Members) but also those not yet qualified persons who are interested in promoting the aims of the Association (Associates) as well as students who plan to work as translators/interpreters.

We hope you will support our endeavours by joining HATI. (For further information and an application form, please visit our website www.hati.org.uk).

Looking forward to hearing from you,

On behalf of the HATI Council

With Best Wishes,

Vassilis Korkas
HATI Secretary
